Poteau girls finish third at OU Invitational; Lady Pirates outlast Purcell, down Pauls Valley on Saturday

NORMAN — The Poteau Lady Pirates came away from the University of Oklahoma Invitational at Reaves Park with third place after holding on for a 3-2 victory over the Purcell Lady Dragons in nine innings Saturday afternoon.
RaeLynn Caldwell struck out six and hit a two-run single scoring the go-ahead and eventual winning runs to lead the Lady Pirates.
In an earlier Saturday game against Pauls Valley, Caldwell struck out nine as the Lady Pirates won 2-1.

Wister boys beat Smithville to win Howe Wood Bat Tournament; Cameron edges Leflore for third place

HOWE — The Wister Wildcats baseball team went through undefeated as Saturday night's 8-2 win over the Smithville Braves at Lions Field brought them the championship plaque of the 2013 Howe Wood Bat Tournament.
The Cameron Yellowjackets edged the Leflore Savages 3-2 to win the third-place game.
Wister beat Leflore 5-1 the first championship semifinal of the day on Saturday afternoon, then Smithville nipped Cameron 2-1 in the second semifinal.

Howe girls gets victories over Whitesboro, Clayton on Friday; Whitesboro girls beat Clayton in battle of Lady Bulldogs

WHITESBORO — The week ended on a high note for the Howe Lady Lions softball team, which won both games played on Friday as they downed host Whitesboro 8-4 and routed Clayton 15-2.
The host Lady Bulldogs beat the visiting Lady Bulldogs from Pushmataha County 12-0.

Panama man gets federal time for distribution charge

A Panama man has been sentenced to six and a half years in federal prison plus four years of probation for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
Samuel L. Jackson, 24, was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Muskogee after pleading guilty to the charge in March.
The charge followed an investigation by the District 16 District Attorney’s Drug Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration. jackson was indicted in December 2012.

Fifth Annual Joe Neff Memorial Run slated for Saturday

It's time for the fifth annual Joe Neff Memorial Poker Run in which proceeds from the benefit will go toward a the annual Neff Scholarship for welding students.
Joe Neff, who was a welder by trade and worked in Fort Smith and Tulsa and owned Neff's Welding in Poteau for years, was murdered in 2009.
This year marks the fifth successful run in memory of Neff and the third year of the memorial donation to a local welding student. This years recipient of a Ranger 225 welder was James Pollard.

Ronald Eugene Owens, 44, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013, in Heavener.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Forrester Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial will be in Conser Cemetery, Hodgen, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.

Margie "Louise" Bartley Kuykendall

Margie “Louise” Bartley Kuykendall, 87, of Bokoshe died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, in Bokoshe. 
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Massey Cemetery in Blocker.  
The family will visit with relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Harvey D. Gibson, 63, of Summerfield died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Pilgrim’s Rest Baptist Church in Heavener. Burial will be in Reichert Cemetery under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.

James Marion Kitchens, 85, of Rushford, Minn., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Winona Health in Winona.
