Panama girls beat Haileyville; Spiro teams sweep Acorn; Haileyville Warriors hand homestanding Panama Razorbacks setback

PANAMA — The news was good for three of LeFlore County's four high school basketball teams that played in the final day of the Panama Holiday Festival on Monday.
The homestanding Panama Lady Razorbacks handled the Haileyville Lady Warriors 61-35.
Prior to that, the Spiro basketball teams swept Acorn, Ark. The Bulldogs routed the Arkansans 84-37, while the Lady Bulldogs survived a scare from Acorn to post a 71-61 victory.
The lone county blemish on the night happened in the final game of the night when the Warriors got past the host Hogs 62-48.

Heavener girls fall to Mulberry in third-place game at Mansfield; Wolves come up short against Paris in tournament consolation finals

MANSFIELD, Ark. — The Heavener High School basketball teams had shots at some hardware on Monday at the Mansfield Tournament. They both came up short.
The Lady Wolves lost 59-46 to Mulberry, Ark., in the third-place game Monday afternoon.
The Lady Wolves fell in the championship semifinals 54-39 to host Mansfield on Friday.
The Wolves were edged 61-59 by Paris, Ark., in Monday afternoon's consolation finals.
The Wolves got their first tournament win in the consolation semifinals, downing Union Christian Academy of Fort Smith, Ark., 55-40 on Saturday.

2014 Junior High County Tournament starts Monday; Guide coming out Saturday; team photos, rosters needed by end of today

I wish you all a Happy New Year on Wednesday. With the coming of a new year means one thing for LeFlore County basketball fans — county tournaments.
The 2014 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament will begin Monday, with five total sites of action next week — host Arkoma along with Panama, Pocola, Spiro and Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Junior High County Tournament Guide will come out in Saturday's edition, and will be printed on Thursday. Thus, I need all teams' photographs and NUMERIC rosters by the end of today so I can have them for the Guide.

Poteau wrestlers come in fourth at Evangel Holiday Classic; coach surpasses 400 coaching wins during event

SHREVEPORT, La. — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team came in fourth at last weekend's Evangel Holiday Classic.
The Pirates (7-3) won their pool on Friday, dominating the opposition by outscoring them 221-93.
That put the Pirates into the main draw for the team title on Saturday, in which they went 2-2. Poteau lost its opening-round dual 52-25 to Edmond, then beat Byrd (48-25) and John Curtis (45-36) to make it to the consolation final dual. There, the Pirates met Edmond again, losing to the Bulldogs 46-32.
During the weekend, Poteau coach Jack Hornbuckle got his 400th coaching victory.

Poteau boys lose consolation finals to Covington, Tenn., on Saturday; Pirates get first win of season, beating Ashdown in Friday afternoon's consolation semifinals

HARRISON, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates basketball team split its final two games of the 2013 Lendel Thomas Classic this past weekend. After beating Ashdown, Ark., 40-33 in the consolation semifinals on Friday, the Pirates fell 63-46 to Covington, Tenn., in Saturday's consolation finals.
Editor's note: Thursday's Roland home games have been canceled and will be rescheduled for near the end of the regular season in February. Saturday's home games with Atoka will be at 2:30 and 4 p.m.

Spiro teams too much for Panama in Holiday Festival

PANAMA — In a battle of LeFlore County schools on the opening day of the Panama Holiday Festival on Saturday, it was a Spiro domination over host Panama.
The Lady Bulldogs handled the Lady Razorbacks 61-34, then the ’Dogs clawed the Hogs 94-30.

Poteau High School alumni basketball game set Monday

The Poteau High School basketball program is having an alumni basketball game Monday at the Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The match-ups will have odd years vs. even years.
The girls game will start at 6:30 p.m. with boys game to follow.
The fee for alumni to play in the game is $3. To be considered alumni you must have played at least a year of Poteau High School basketball.
Admission is $3 for adults and kids are free. For those interested, pre-registration is greatly appreciated.

Former CASC basketball players among nations elite

Former Carl Albert State College Lady Viking Basketball players Ashala Watson and D. Brown and former Viking LaShawn Gallion are among the top players in some statistical categories at their four-year colleges
Watson is a 5-3 junior point/shooting guard from Magnolia, Ark., and is playing for Lyon College, which is an NAIA Division I school in Batesville, Ark.
Brown is a 5-4  junior shooting guard from Oklahoma City, and is playing for Campbell University, which is an NCAA Division I school in Buies Creek, N.C.

Arkoma receiver named Offensive Player of the Year in District C-4; several Mustangs honored by district

The Arkoma Mustangs made football history this season, winning its first-ever playoff game and making it to the Class C state quarterfinals. They also came in District C-4 runners-up, so several Mustangs were honored by the district.
Arkoma wide receiver Tanner Sweeten was named the District C-4 Offensive Player of the Year.
Ethann Gates was the Quarterback of the Year, Tyler Dailey was the Offensive Lineman of the Year, Tyree Nolden was the Linebacker of the Year and Dakotah Roam was the Utility Player of the Year.

Poteau boys suffer loss to Harrison to begin tourney; Pirates played Ashdown in consolation semifinals on Friday, with a win giving them a shot at consolation title this afternoon

HARRISON, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates basketball team opened the Lendel Thomas Classic with a 66-49 loss to host Harrison on Thursday night.
The Pirates faced Ashdown, Ark., on Friday afternoon in the consolation semifinals, with a win putting them into this afternoon's consolation championship at 1:45 p.m. A loss Friday afternoon will put the Pirates into the seventh-place game at 11:15 this morning.
