Finis Baldwin

Earl Finis Baldwin of Wister was born June 26, 1933. in Wister, the son of Troy and Ruth (Gullick) Baldwin. He died July 7, 2013, in Wister. He was a retired union carpenter and member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 71 in Fort Smith, Ark. After retirement, he worked an additional 10-plus years as a greeter at Walmart in Poteau. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and Korean War and of the Assembly of God faith. He was married to Emma (Pendley) Baldwin. She preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2010. He loved gardening, shooting pool and listening to and telling good jokes.

Martha Lewis Kidd

On July 6, 2013, the Kidd family lost their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and inspiration.
Martha Lewis Kidd was born June 14, 1915, in Fort Smith, Ark, to Nanie Belle Southard Lewis and Herschel V. Lewis. She grew up in Poteau and Tulsa and graduated from high school in Oklahoma City in 1933. In September 1941, she married James P. Kidd in Los Angeles. The couple celebrated almost 69 years of marriage until Jim’s death in 2010.

Drug raid nets five

Five people were arrested in connection with a narcotics search warrant served Friday.
Jerry D. Ray II, 26; Donna Ray, 42; Eythel Buckner, 53; Ashlie R. Nelson, 28 and Shandee Albert 25, all of Wister, were booked into the LeFlore County Detention Center on multiple drug charges after a narcotics search warrant was served at a home on Pearl Street in Wister.

Poteau man escapes injury in rollover accident

Ryan Adams, 27, of Poteau, escaped serious injury Monday after a cliff-hanging blowout. Adams was headed north on the bypass near Polk Creek Road when a tire on the trailer he was towing deflated. The blowout caused the 2010 Chevy pickup to swerve to the right then roll over atop the guardrail, according to Poteau Police who investigated the accident. The trailer saved Adams pickup from going over the guardrail and rolling down a steep hill.

AES official confirms restructure resulted in layoffs

An area business confirmed Monday, employees were laid off at the end of June.
Lundy Kiger, vice president and director of government operations confirmed Monday that four employees have been released from their duties at the Shady Point location as a result of the restructure of the corporation.

Hodgen prison escapee caught near Summerfield

July 8, 2013

The five-day manhunt for an escaped inmate from the Jim E. Hamilton Corrections Center came to an end Friday in Summerfield.
According to LeFlore County Sheriff Rob Seale, the sheriff's department received a call that escaped inmate Curtis Edwin Gibson, 51, had been sighted at a set of dumpsters in Summerfield.
Seale said Gibson ran off into nearby woods and a search immediately began. Officers with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Sheriff's Department, Wister Police and the JEHCC CERT team arrived at the location Gibson was last seen. Gibson was located 30 minutes later.

Registration is open for the 2013 LeFlore County Express Fall Soccer League.
Registration can be done through the Internet at www.leflorecountysoccer.com.
Late registration cost per child is $40.
Payment method details are available at the website.

The Poteau Area Recreational Complex will have the Men's ASA District Tournament July 12-13.
Entry fee is $175 per team. Deadline for entry is 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Teams must pay with cashier's check, money order, or cash. Cashier checks and money orders made out to the City of Poteau.

Vikings' Gallion moves on to next level, signs with Southern University-NO

Carl Albert State College Vikings basketball player LaShawn Gallion,  a 6-6 sophomore post player from Jacksonville, Fla., signed a letter of intent to play basketball with Southern University at New Orleans, which is an NAIA school.
Gallion is excited to continue playing basketball.
“It means a lot and this is telling me that there is more basketball to be played [for me],” Gallion said. “I always dreamed about playing at the next level. When I arrived at Carl Albert, I knew it could happen.”
Having players moving on pays dividends for CASC men's coach Mike St. John.
