CROWDER — If the Talihina Golden Tigers baseball team wants to make next week’s Class 2A State Tournament, it had to win three games in two days.
The Golden Tigers split their first two games in the Class 2A Regional Tournament on Thursday, beating Oktaha 12-3 but losing to Tushka 11-1.
The Golden Tigers (16-11) faced the winner of the Crowder-Oktaha game late Friday afternoon, with that winner facing Tushka on Friday night in the regional finals. If a second title game is needed, it will take place at 1 this afternoon.
There will be one thing for certain this afternoon at Town Creek Park. The Pirates will be the Class 4A Regional Tournament champion and headed to state. The only question is will it be Poteau High School's Pirates or the Pirates of Byng High School.
Poteau forced the second title game by picking up two wins in the face of elimination.
In the 2 p.m. loser’s bracket final, Poteau came from behind to defeat Broken Bow, 13-7, to earn another shot against Byng.
SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team finds itself one win away from returning to the Class 3A State Tournament.
The Bulldogs weathered, literally, Thursday’s rainy conditions to post to wins on their home field in the Class 3A Regional Tournament, beating Eufaula 2-0 and Hartshorne 11-0 in a no-hitter by the combination of Frank Solomon and Quaylon Griffith.
The ’Dogs (25-6) will play for their second straight trip to state at 1 p.m. Saturday in the regional final against Stigler, which must beat Spiro twice to win the regional to make state.
The LeFlore County Bass Club had its fifth tournament of the 2013 circuit Sunday at Applegate Marina on Robert S. Kerr Reservoir.
There were 34 boats with 62 expert anglers who caught 121 fish weighing a total of 338.42 pounds. The average fish weighed 2.8 pounds, and 18 limits were caught.
Kevin Bell and Jesse Patton bested the field to win the tournament with 19.67 pounds caught to earn $770.
Jason Roberts and Bob Denton were second (18.73 pounds, $380), followed by Jason Wickware and Russ Warner (17.44, $230) and Joe Phillips and Boog Watts (16.24, $170).
The Poteau Pirates soccer team will play in the Class 4A state quarterfinals at 7 tonight on the road against the Oologah Mustangs.
If the Pirates win, they not only return to the state semifinals, but will do so at Costner Stadium.
OKLAHOMA CITY — With the loss of Russell Westbrook after Game 2, the Oklahoma City Thunder has struggled in the past two games, especially in key moments.
In Game 5 Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena, the Thunder was looking for more consistency from its defense, and a chance to close the series up. Houston's 3-point percentage has steadily gone up through the first four games, and was at 44 percent in Game 4 on Monday night in Houston.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Mother Nature's wrath was felt big time at Lake Hefner South Golf Course, the site of the Class 4A State Girls Golf Tournament.
Due to inclement weather, which featured sleet, the final round of the tournament was postponed on Thursday, thus turning the tournament into a one-day event that took place Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Pirates, who were the defending state champions, ended up as state runners-up with a score of 360, finishing one shot behind state champion Hilldale (359).
HEAVENER — Heavener High School senior track athletes Laura Jo Allen and Aaron Turner will graduate later this month, but before they do they will have one more athletic event.
The Heavener senior track duo qualified for the Class 3A State Meet, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Ardmore High School’s Noble Stadium.
Both athletes are glad to get one more shot at performing at the state meet.
