Poteau golfer signs with UALR

November 20, 2013

In the past three high school golf seasons, Poteau senior Hannah Ward has won the last two Class 4A State Tournaments after being 4A state runner-up as a freshman, not to mention all the other junior golf honors that have come her way. So, it was really not a question of if Ward would sign to play college golf, but where.
Ward answered that question as she signed a golf letter of intent with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday morning in a signing ceremony at the high school.
“I'm very excited,” Ward said. “I've always wanted to play Division I golf.”

Talihina Golden Tigers to hunt some (Hominy) Bucks; winner will reach Class A quarterfinals next week

November 20, 2013

For hunting enthusiasts, gun season will begin this weekend — great news for those going to hunt bucks. Perhaps it's appropriate that there will be a local football team going hunting for some bucks.
The Talihina Golden Tigers (11-0) will entertain the Hominy Bucks (6-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Doc Robinson Stadium in the second round of the Class A playoffs.

Match-up with Clinton stirs old memories; Thursday night's community pep rally canceled (UPDATED)

November 20, 2013

In 1965, the Poteau Pirates were Class 2A district champs. The Pirates were lead by the late Dr. Mike Logan, who was injured early in the year. Chris Conn won most of the games in the middle of the year, but Logan came back in the last couple of games and led them into the state semifinals. The Pirates lost to Broken Bow, which then lost to Clinton in the state championship. That was the first time that I had ever heard of Clinton. It seems like every year since, either Ada or Clinton hoisted the gold ball. It was not until 1988-89 the Pirates started making deep runs into the playoffs.

Freshman season at NSU a hard one for former Pirate

November 20, 2013

Although he was a Poteau Pirate for one year, Jay Werner, whose father, Greg, is now leading the Pirates into the Class 4A state quarterfinals, is representing LeFlore County at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where he was a deep snapper on punts for the RiverHawks.
NSU went 2-8, although beating archrival Central Oklahoma 45-38 last weekend to keep possession of the President's Cup for at least another year. Needless to say, Werner's first fall season was a rough one to endure, but he did find at least one silver lining in a cloud.
