James Haskin files notice to appeal conviction

James Haskin Jr., 61, of Monroe, has filed a notice to appeal his sentence of more than two centuries after being convicted for sex crimes against his children.
Haskin was convicted by a jury on nine counts of child neglect and three counts of child sexual abuse.
In February, District Judge Jon Sullivan followed the jury's suggested sentencing and gave Haskin 245 years in prison.

Former OU quarterback Steve Davis died in Indiana plane crash

AP- Former Oklahoma quarterback Steve Davis was among two victims in a plane crash Sunday in South Bend, Ind. A South Bend television station confirmed the death with the cororner.
Two persons survived the crash and are hospitalized. A woman on the ground was injured. The second victim has not been identified.
Davis, 60, was best known as the Sooners’ quarterback from 1973-75. During that span OU went 32-1-1 and claimed back-to-back national championships in 1974 and 1975. His 32 wins were a program record until it was surpassed this past season by Landry Jones.

Poteau soccer teams split in home openers with Mena, Ark.

The Poteau High School soccer teams split their home openers with Mena, Ark., Thursday at Costner Stadium.
The Pirates blanked the Bearcats 9-0, but the Lady Pirates suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands, or feet rather, of the Lady Bearcats.
After taking Spring Break week off, the Poteau teams will return to action March 26 against Van Buren, Ark., at Costner Stadium.
The girls contest will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7 p.m.

Heavener soccer teams get home victories over McAlester

HEAVENER — The Heavener High School soccer teams will enter Spring Break on a high note as they swept home games Thursday night from McAlester at Harvey Stadium.
The Lady Wolves had to go to another shootout, but outlasted the Lady Buffaloes 3-2. The Wolves blanked the Buffaloes 6-0.
The Heavener teams will be idle until after the break. The Lady Wolves will play at 7 p.m. March 26 on the road against Porter Consolidated. Then, both teams will return to the field for the Stilwell Tournament, which will take place March 28-29.

Poteau JV golf girls fifth at Broken Bow

BROKEN BOW — The Poteau Lady Pirates junior varsity golf team finished in fifth place at the Broken Bow Invitational on Thursday at Cedar Creek Golf Course. The Lady Pirates had a team score of 477.
Alyssa Vineyard led Poteau with a 116, while Jenna Stites and Dallas Terry each carded 118s.
Kori Lafevers had a 137, while Haley Clark shot a 137.
The Lady Pirates will hit the links next at the Oktaha Tournament, which will begin at 9 a.m. March 27 at Fountainhead Resort Golf Course.

Arkoma freshmen track boys win Heavener JH Invitational

HEAVENER — The Arkoma Mustangs freshmen boys, who comprise all the high school's track athletes, won the Heavener Junior High Invitational track meet Thursday at Harvey Stadium.
Dakotah Roam won five gold medals, four individually for winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes as well as the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Roam, Talon Woolsey, Nathan Willis and Ethann Gates won the 400-meter relay.
Woolsey won the 400-meter dash and the long jump, was runner-up in the 1,600-meter run and took third in the 800-meter run.
Willis was second in the 200-meter dash.

The Poteau Chip-In Club will have a golf benefit beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday at Choctaw Country Club.
The entry fee for the three-person scramble is $30 per player.
All proceeds will go to the Poteau High School golf programs to help with travel expenses, indoor training facility and golf outerwear.

Choctaw Country Club is having a membership drive until April 1. Anyone signing up to become a member from now until March 30 will be able to use the country club for free, and play a round of golf for free.

Heavener Wolves claw Panama Razorbacks

PANAMA — The Heavener Wolves traveled to Panama Thursday afternoon for a Leflore County match-up. The road team batted around in the third, fourth and fifth innings, taking the run-rule victory by a score of 19-8.

TALIHINA — The Stigler Panthers came to town and downed the Talihina Golden Tigers 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.
With the game tied at 2 after three, the Panthers broke the tie with a single run in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth.
Sallisaw-Central 5, Leflore 1: In Leflore, Caleb Smith's second home run of the season, a solo shot, put the Savages ahead 1-0 in the opening inning.
However, two Leflore errors led to five unearned runs for the Tigers in the third inning.

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs softball team got its second win of the young season Thursday afternoon with a 6-4 win over the Panama Lady Razorbacks.
Trailing 3-0 in the first inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the first and four runs in the second inning for a 6-3 lead.
Madison Stout's RBI single scored Hannah Goines for the Lady Razorbacks in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 6-4, but they got no closer.
Wister 6, Cameron 1: In Cameron, the Lady Wildcats had a six-run second inning to put the game away.
