Poteau boys blank Roland; Senior pitcher throws one-hitter with 13 Ks

When new Poteau football coach Greg Werner arrived, his senior son, Jay, was going to be part of the Pirates' team as a tight end and a deep snapper. However, the gridiron isn't the only place Jay's presence is going to be felt.
Werner excels on the pitching mound as he did on the football field. The Poteau senior pitcher struck out 13 batters and tossed a one-hitter as the Pirates blanked the Roland Rangers 8-0 in a five-inning, run-ruled game Thursday at Town Creek Park.

Wister boys reach semifinals of Smithville Tournament; Howe, Whitesboro boys on consolation side

SMITHVILLE — The Wister Wildcats hope to be playing at 4 this afternoon for a championship.
The Wildcats handled the Battiest Panthers 15-4 in the opening round of the Smithville Tournament on Thursday night.
The ’Cats played Haworth, a 13-2 winner over Whitesboro, Friday in the championship semifinals, with the winner playing for the championship at 4 this afternoon against the winner of Friday night's Smithville-Red Oak game. The losers will play for third place at 2 this afternoon.
The Howe Lions split their two Thursday games, beating Fort Towson 5-4 but losing 11-0 to Red Oak.

Cameron boys pick up Friday afternoon home win over Panola

CAMERON — Cameron starter Alex Humphries sat down four of the first five hitters he faced and the Yellowjackets never looked back scoring a 10-0 run-rule victory on the Panola Bearcats Friday afternoon.

Poteau wrestler makes East All-State Team

Poteau High School wrestler Tyler Tustin was named as the starting 138-pounder for the East team at the 2013 All State Games this July. Tustin will face Anadarko's Blake Trescott.
Tustin finished his career 168-8, which put him as the leader in most career wins and pins as well as highest career winning percentage.

Talihina girl basketball player makes OGBCA All-State Team

Talihina Lady Golden Tiger basketball player Tara Hawkins has been named to the East team for the 2013 Oklahoma Girls Basketabll Coaches Association All-State Games, which will be June 1 in Norman.
Hawkins averaged 11.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals this past season with 62 blocked shots. She scored 319 points, was 73-of-152 (45 percent) from the field, 28-of-91 (31 percent) on 3-point shooting and 89-of-129 (70 percent) in free-throw shooting. She had 224 rebounds, 90 assists and 89 steals.

Carl Albert softball team sweeps road pair from Connors State; Lady Vikings play this weekend in Carthage (Mo.) Festival

WARNER — The Carl Albert Lady Vikings softball team picked up a pair of road wins Thursday afternoon against the Connors State College Cowgirls.
The Lady Vikings got a run-ruled 15-6 victory in the opener, then broke a 4-all tie in the seventh inning for a 5-4 win.

Amos “Aurbie” Humphries, 87, of Poteau died Friday, March 15, 2013, in Poteau. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in Vaughn Cemetery, Gilmore. The family with visit with friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Okla. House member apologizes to colleagues

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A Democratic House member who shouted at a Republican colleague following a late-night floor session has apologized on the House floor.

Heavener Democrat James Lockhart delivered a brief but emotional apology Wednesday from the well at the front of the House. He then received a standing ovation.

Following a floor session on Tuesday that lasted until midnight, Lockhart could be heard shouting at Faxon Republican Rep. Don Armes, who was presiding over the chamber. Several Democrats were frustrated Armes wouldn't recognize members of their party for various motions.

The Poteau Lady Pirates didn't let a six-day layoff bother them as they routed the Roland Rangers 12-1 in a four-inning, run-rule home game Thursday afternoon.
