Tuesday's High School Softball Roundup

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves got their second win of the season as they routed the Battiest Lady Panthers 12-0 Tuesday afternoon in their home opener.
The home action was to have been a three-way with Sallisaw, but its coach was taken earlier in the day by ambulance from Sallisaw High School to a local hospital. Thus, the Lady Black Diamonds did not participate.
Clayton 14, Whitesboro 12: In Whitesboro, in a battle of Lady Bulldogs, Clayton outlasted Whitesboro.

Carl Albert softball team splits road games against Rose State

MIDWEST CITY — The Carl Albert State College softball team split its road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon against Rose State College.
The Lady Vikings took the nightcap 3-1 after losing the opener 10-2 in a five-inning, run-rule game.
Loula (1-2) suffered the loss for Carl Albert, which will return to action at 2 this afternoon in a home doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa. Saturday's home twinbill against Arkansas Baptist has been canceled because the Little Rock school canceled its entire season.

Late-inning offense rallies Poteau past Panama girls in season opener

PANAMA — Things could not have started better for the Panama Lady Razorbacks and worse for the Poteau Lady Pirates in Tuesday afternoon's season-opener for the 2013 spring slow-pitch softball season. However, in the end, it was just the reverse.
Thanks to a pair of late-inning rallies by the Lady Pirates, they were able to come back to down the Lady ’Backs by the score of 5-3.
Editor's note — Tuesday afternoon's home softball game for Wister against McCurtain was canceled. No make-up date has been set.

Monday's High School Softball Roundup

WISTER — It was a banner way to open the 2013 slow-pitch softball season Monday afternoon for the Wister Lady Wildcats. The Lady ’Cats edged the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 2-1, then outlasted the Heavener Lady Wolves 8-7.
The middle game of Monday's three-way was won by Heavener 11-3 over Whitesboro.
Cameron 17, Gans 8: In Cameron, with the game tied at 4 in the early innings, the Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Grizzlies 13-4 the rest of the way to win on opening day.
Editor's Note — Howe's game at Panola was canceled due to the Lady Bearcats not having enough players.

Spiro boys rout Stigler to win 2013 baseball opener

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs notched their first win of the young baseball season Monday afternoon, routing the Stigler Panthers 13-3 in a five-inning, run-rule victory.
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the first inning and another four in the fourth to cruise to the victory.

HEAVENER — The Todd Hackler era at Heavener got started on the right foot as the Wolves edged the Panama Razorbacks 6-5 on Monday.
Cameron 8, Wilburton 2: In Cameron, the Cameron Yellowjackets got their first win of the season Monday afternoon.
Gore 9, Arkoma 0: In Gore, the Mustangs had the bases loaded twice, in the second and fifth innings, but could not score. They were also no-hit by Gore's pitcher.
Arkoma's Thursday afternoon game against McCurtain has been moved to Arkoma, beginning at 4 p.m.

Poteau JV boys golf team places fourth at Stigler

STIGLER — The Poteau Pirates junior varsity golf team was fourth at the Stigler Invitational, which took place Monday at Brier Creek Golf Course.
The Pirates had a team score of 409.
Leading the way for the Pirates was Joel Holstead, who carded a 95. John Buckles shot a 99, followed by Connor Bandy with a 102, Brandon Durant with a 113 and Grant Buckles with a 116.

Talihina senior hoop duo wants one more gold ball

TALIHINA — Two years ago when the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team won the Class 2A State Tournament, current seniors Clark Austin and Caleb Killingsworth were sophomores on that squad.
After not making state as juniors, Friday night they punched their tickets to the 2013 Class 2A State Tournament with a 62-50 win over the Preston Pirates to win the area tournament. The feeling Friday night was a little different than two years ago when the Golden Tigers beat the Pirates to make state.

Talihina boys back at state

For four straight years, 2008-11, the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team ended each of those seasons at the Class 2A State Tournament, winning the gold ball in 2011.
Two years later, the Golden Tigers find themselves back at state. However, unlike the other four trips, the Golden Tigers are likely the least favorite team of the eight there to win the gold ball Saturday night at Oklahoma City's State Fair Arena.

Poteau girls golf team opens season with second-place finish

BROKEN ARROW — The Poteau Lady Pirates golf team began defense of its Class 4A state title with a second-place finish in the Broken Arrow Invitational, which took place Monday at Emerald Falls Golf Course.
There were 12 teams in the tournament field, and Poteau was the only Class 4A team. The rest were teams from Classes 5A and 6A. Host Broken Arrow, a Class 6A team, won the tournament.
