Hunting regulations and little fishing

November 14, 2013

Gun season is fast approaching, Nov. 23-Dec. 8. Don’t forget your hunter education training, which is needed before you can hunt. Residents who are age 10 or older must complete hunter education certification training.
Time is running out — and you might need to do it online to get it done in time to hunt. Another last-minute thing you might need is a replacement hunter education card. Go to www.wildlifedepartment.com.

Arkoma seniors look to make history Friday night at home; Mustangs seek first-ever playoff win, welcome Timberlake Tigers to town

November 13, 2013

ARKOMA — While the Arkoma Mustangs have been a playoff team before, they have never won a football playoff game before.
That could change Friday night as the Mustangs (6-3) entertain the Timberlake Tigers (6-4) at 7:30 p.m. in a Class C opening-round playoff contest.
“I wouldn't even know how to say it,” senior Darion Brumfield said about the emotions a Friday night victory would create. “I would be proud of myself to have been a part of it.”

November 13, 2013

PANAMA — As freshmen and sophomores, the eight senior Panama Razorback football players endured a 17-game losing streak — going winless as freshmen and not winning until Week 8 of the 2011 season with a win over archrival Pocola. Now, the Hogs are in the postseason for the second straight season. Last year when the Razorbacks traveled to meet the Okemah Panthers, the Class 2A playoffs were brand new. Not anymore.

GREENWOOD, Ark. — For the second straight season, the sixth-grade Poteau Bandit League football team went through undefeated at 10-0 — as the team did so a season ago as fifth-graders going 9-0. However, this time it took a late score, and a bit of trickery, to get the second title.
Mason Barcheers ran for a 6-yard touchdown and Wade Hall kicked the conversion with 1:32 left in the game as the sixth-graders defeated Union Christian Academy from Fort Smith, Ark., 14-6 Saturday afternoon to win the Bandit Bowl.

Poteau Pirates gain home-field advantage

November 13, 2013

Technically, the Poteau Pirates are tri-champions of District 4A-4 with Tulsa Cascia Hall and Sallisaw. The Pirates got a big boost from one of their archrivals, the Black Diamonds, on Friday night. Their win over Fort Gibson threw the race into a three-way tie. The Pirates had the tie breaker due to district points as they outdistanced Cascia Hall and Sallisaw, who finished as the second- and third-seeded teams, respectfully.
Thursday night, the Pirates traveled to S.E. Williams Stadium in Tulsa, where they faced the Tulsa Rogers Ropers.
