WISTER — In a prelude of next week’s Class 2A District Tournament, Wister pitcher Tyler Gibson threw a one-hitter as the Wildcats blanked the Pocola Indians 11-0 on Monday afternoon.
Gibson struck out eight batters in four innings, allowing only a third-inning, lead-off single to Pocola’s Casey Sather — which spoiled the Wister senior pitcher’s perfect-game bid.
TAHLEQUAH — It was a rough start to the week for the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team on Monday as they suffered a pair of road losses against the host Tahlequah Lady Tigers by scores of 10-2 and 7-1.
Cameron 21, Gans 4: In Cameron, the Lady Yellowjackets ended the regular season in grand fashion.
With the game tied at 4 after an inning, the Lady ’Jackets scored three runs in the second inning, five runs in the third and nine runs in the fifth inning to get the game to mercy-rule status.
Ray Baldridge, 83, of Poteau died Tuesday, April 16, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Calvary Assembly of God in Poteau. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Heavener, under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.
Reanus E. Cox, 87, of Panama died Sunday, April 14, 2013, in Panama.
Reanus was born Jan. 31, 1926, in Tahona to Sim and Vada (Phillips) Cox. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was involved in the Normandy Invasion. He was retired as a lock and dam operator for the civil service and also retired as chief of the Panama Fire Department. Reanus was a member of the Moshulatubbee Masonic Lodge, Cameron.Â

The walk/run will be Saturday, May 11. Registration for runners will begin at 7:30 a.m. and registration for walkers will start at 8:30 a.m. at Poteau Elementary School. Those running in the Killer will leave the school at 8:15 a.m.; walkers will leave at 9:30 a.m. The race will end at the pavilion atop Cavanal Hill
Shelby Smith, a seveth-grade student from Heavener Elementary School qualified for the State Geography Bee — the only student from LeFlore County to do so. The bee was held on April 5 at the University of Oklahoma Campus in Norman. Shelby's parents are April and Cody Smith. Â
Sabrina Dyer has been named 2013 Â Heavener Elementary Teacher of the Year.
She is married to Jeremy and they have two sons, Sean, 9, and Johathan, 6.
Dyer taught fourth grade in Killeen, Texas, for two years and fourth grade at Bokoshe for three years.
She also worked on the High School Yearbook and was Junior High and High School Cheerleading sponsor at Bokoshe.
Dyer has been at Heavener for six years teaching math and music. Â She also is the Junior High Student Council sponsor and coaches fifth and sixth grade academic team.
STIGLER — The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team split its road doubleheader Friday afternoon with the Stigler Lady Panthers.
After losing the opener 11-8, Wister took the nightcap 10-3.
BATTIEST — The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team came in fourth at the Battiest Tournament, which took place Thursday through Saturday.
Heavener lost in the consolation semifinal 11-2 to Broken Bow on Saturday after beating Smithville 10-3. On Friday, Heavener split its two games, beating Fort Towson 5-3 before losing 8-6 to Hugo.
The good news was the Poteau Pirates soccer team celebrated homecoming Friday night with a 5-0 win over the Stilwell Indians at Costner Stadium.
The not-so-good news was the Lady Pirates came close to making it a homecoming sweep, but the Lady Indians prevailed 3-2 in the opener.
The Poteau teams will play their regular-season finales today at Costner Stadium against their district foes, and local rivals, from Heavener. The girls game will be at 5 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m. If the Pirates win, they will be district champions.
