Spring is in the air, so put some spring in your fitness routine. Will you accept the challenge of walking or running to the top of the World’s Highest Hill?
Consider joining the sixth annual Cavanal Killer 5-mile Walk-Run.
The walk/run will be Saturday, May 11. Registration for runners will begin at 7:30 a.m. and registration for walkers will start at 8:30 a.m. at Poteau Elementary School. Those running in the Killer will leave the school at 8:15 a.m.; walkers will leave at 9:30 a.m. The race will end at the pavilion atop Cavanal Hill
Shelby Smith, a seveth-grade student from Heavener Elementary School qualified for the State Geography Bee — the only student from LeFlore County to do so. The bee was held on April 5 at the University of Oklahoma Campus in Norman. Shelby's parents are April and Cody Smith. Â
Sabrina Dyer has been named 2013 Â Heavener Elementary Teacher of the Year.
She is married to Jeremy and they have two sons, Sean, 9, and Johathan, 6.
Dyer taught fourth grade in Killeen, Texas, for two years and fourth grade at Bokoshe for three years.
She also worked on the High School Yearbook and was Junior High and High School Cheerleading sponsor at Bokoshe.
Dyer has been at Heavener for six years teaching math and music. Â She also is the Junior High Student Council sponsor and coaches fifth and sixth grade academic team.
STIGLER — The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team split its road doubleheader Friday afternoon with the Stigler Lady Panthers.
After losing the opener 11-8, Wister took the nightcap 10-3.
BATTIEST — The Heavener Lady Wolves softball team came in fourth at the Battiest Tournament, which took place Thursday through Saturday.
Heavener lost in the consolation semifinal 11-2 to Broken Bow on Saturday after beating Smithville 10-3. On Friday, Heavener split its two games, beating Fort Towson 5-3 before losing 8-6 to Hugo.
The good news was the Poteau Pirates soccer team celebrated homecoming Friday night with a 5-0 win over the Stilwell Indians at Costner Stadium.
The not-so-good news was the Lady Pirates came close to making it a homecoming sweep, but the Lady Indians prevailed 3-2 in the opener.
The Poteau teams will play their regular-season finales today at Costner Stadium against their district foes, and local rivals, from Heavener. The girls game will be at 5 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 7 p.m. If the Pirates win, they will be district champions.
TONKAWA — The weekend was a good one for the Carl Albert State College softball team, which swept a road doubleheader Friday afternoon from the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks by scores of 10-3 and 2-1.
The Lady Vikings will make up their home twinbill against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, which was rained out on Feb. 28, at 2 this afternoon.
How time flies when you're having fun. Can you believe the playoffs have arrived? It just seems like the baseball and slow-pitch softball seasons started.
However, for several diamond teams, the second season will begin this week. The complete playoff schedule is at the bottom of this column. Some of the district tournaments in softball will be played tomorrow to beat the threat of rain.

The Poteau Pirates will be in the Fort Gibson Tournament, which will be Thursday through Saturday.

Honobia Senior Citizens Center is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to providing nutritious lunches for persons in this area five days per week. In order to continue to provide this service, we must rely on fundraising projects. These include playing bingo on the first Thursday of each month and a 5K Big Foot Run annually. A snack bar is available at these events. Occasionally, we have pie auctions and other special events. We invite you to come and join us.

On July 1, 2011, the Heavener Runestone Park ceased to be a state-run park and became a privatized recreational area managed by the Friends of the Heavener Runestone Park and Historical Site.
The Friends of the Heavener Runestone Park and Historical Site is a group of LeFlore County residents who have joined forces with the city of Heavener to save the park from closure and ensure its continued operation. The group works closely with and seeks advice from the Oklahoma Department of Tourism, maintaining an excellent working relationship.
