Monday's High School Softball Roundup

SALLISAW — Poteau senior pitcher RaeLynn Caldwell picked up right where she left off after last week's LeFlore County Tournament.
After allowing one run and striking out 45 batters in four games in the county tournament, Caldwell threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts as the Lady Pirates blanked the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds 4-0 Monday afternoon. Caldwell ran her record to 21-7 with the win.

Pocola girls get past Howe

POCOLA — The week got off on the right foot for the Pocola Lady Indians softball team as it posted a 10-4 home win over the Howe Lady Lions on Monday afternoon.

Panama girls beat Vici, lose to Okemah in Hall of Fame Shootout

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Panama Lady Razorbacks split their two games at the Hall of Fame Shootout on Saturday at Hall of Fame Stadium.
Panama blanked Vici 4-0, but lost 5-2 to Okemah.

Bokoshe angler solves Arkansas River to win Central Open

MUSKOGEE — Bokoshe's Chris Jones got off to an ominous start Saturday morning when his motor conked out and he had to be towed by Boat US.
When Jones got back to business at about 9:15 a.m., he relied on his knowledge of the Arkansas River to catch a 13-pound, 10-ounce limit and clinch the Bass Pro Shops BASSMaster Central Open pro division title. The Bokoshe angler finished with a three-day total of 40 pounds, 1 ounce and earned the top prize of a Nitro Z9/Mercury 225 Pro XS rig valued at $40,000 and $7,253 in cash.

Playoff time has arrived

It just seems like yesterday that opening day on the high school fast-pitch softball and fall baseball diamonds took place. Now, it's playoff time.
The Class 3A, 2A, A and B fast-pitch softball district tournaments as well as all of fall baseball's district tournaments will take place this week as the postseason begins.
The complete schedule is listed below.
Poteau's girls were named the host team of the Class 4A District Tournament with Roland, which will take place next week.

Friday softball games rained out, canceled

Mother Nature was the big winner on Friday when it came to softball. Howe's home three-way with Smithville and Battiest was rained out.
Bokoshe canceled its home game with Cameron, while the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs got a forfeited win over Haileyville.
Editor's note: Nothing was reported on Panama's Saturday games at the Hall of Fame Shootout by press time.

Suddenlink holds customer appreciation day

Wesley McDonald, a broadband technician for Suddenlink, prepares a hamburger for Rhett Sulser of Poteau as part of Suddenlink’s annual customer appreciation event. Customers were invited to come by the company’s Poteau office for free hamburgers and hotdogs on Monday. Also on hand for the event were Suddenlink plant manager Perry Miller (behind McDonald) and customer service representative Pamela Hammerton (not pictured).

Spiro FUMC to host car show and breakfast

The dictionary defines them as “a thin cake made of batter, poured on a hot, greased skillet and cooked on both sides until brown."
You may have called them griddle cakes, flapjacks, an excuse for lots of syrup — maybe even pancakes. Whatever you call them, they will be great breakfast eating on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Spiro First United Methodist Church.
And that's just the start of a fun- and food-filled day as the annual Car and Arts and Crafts Shows get underway.

Ruby Mae Cusick

Ruby Mae Cusick, 82, of Spiro died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Murry Spur Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery, Spiro, under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.

Ida Maebell Clough

Ida Maebell Clough, 88, of Shady Point died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, in Shady Point. Ida was born Nov. 2, 1924, in Leflore to Rufus L. and Ada Gwin. She was a homemaker. Ida was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Thomas E. French; and beloved husband, Emmett Eugene Clough. Ida was a Christian lady who loved her church. She loved gardening, sewing, cooking and having family gatherings.
Survivors include her sons, Larry French of Shady Point and Lester French of Poteau; many stepchildren; grandchildren; other loved ones and beloved friends.
