Another home game for Panama, this time against Warner Eagles

September 20, 2013

Week 3 is upon us, and so, too, is another home game for the Panama Razorbacks football team, which will welcome the Warner Eagles to George Ollie Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. Friday contest.
“We've love getting to start with three home games,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “That gets the kids fired up playing at home. The thing is we don't have to leave early. They can go home and get ready. The fan base doesn't have to travel. The environment is better with more fans here.”

Arkoma has big road test Friday night against Maud

September 20, 2013

After having both of its scrimmages this preseason, its season opener and District C-4 opener all at Mustang Field, the Arkoma Mustangs will finally hit the road. However, it's going to be a rough road opener as the Mustangs will meet the Maud Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“It's our first road trip of the season,” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “You always worry about that when you haven't been on the road yet. It's a long road trip — three hours to get there. I hope it won't be a factor, but it could be a factor.”

Poteau freshmen, PKMS teams lose road games against Van Buren

September 19, 2013

VAN BUREN, Ark. — It was a rough night on the gridiron for the Poteau Pirates freshmen football team and the Pansy Kidd Middle School teams on Tuesday.
The Pirate freshmen were shut out 24-0 by the Van Buren Pointers to drop to 0-3 on the season.
The eighth-grade Raiders suffered a 43-22 loss to the Pointers in a game much closer than the score indicates.
The seventh-grade Raiders fell 14-6 to Van Buren.
The freshmen will return to action at 8 p.m. Sept. 26 at Costner Stadium against the Muldrow Bulldogs.

Barbara Johnson (24:34) and Gloriann Staines (25:45) also medaled since they finished the women's race in less than 30 minutes.
Heavener had one other runner participate in Tuesday's event. Frank Cruz ran the course in 20:02 to just miss out on medalling.

Fall hunting season is near: Watch out for snakes

September 19, 2013

The snakes are on the move right now. Oklahoma’s western diamondback rattlesnakes start making moves toward community dens. They generally seek out a cave or rocky recess where they will hibernate for the winter.
Just last week, the mom of one of my ball players got bit by one of those poisonous slithering creatures; she never saw it, either, but she sure felt the bite afterward.
She spent several hours at the emergency room.

Poteau, Panama girls make LCT winner's-bracket finals; Lady Pirate ace throws second perfect game of tournament, which will crown county champ Thursday night

September 18, 2013

PANAMA — The Poteau Lady Pirates and the Panama Lady Razorbacks are the two lone undefeated teams in the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament. They will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday to decide which team will be the first to reach Thursday night's 7:30 p.m. title game.
The Lady Pirates blanked the Wister Lady Wildcats 2-0 in one of Tuesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals, while the Lady ’Backs shut out their archrivals, the Pocola Lady Indians, 6-0 in the other semifinal.

Poteau Pirates hit the road Thursday night to meet Tulsa Webster; Game will kick off at 7 p.m., not 7:30 p.m.

September 18, 2013

The good news is the Poteau Pirates footbal team is 2-0, and that's because of a pair of dramatic wins — the last one being Friday night at Costner Stadium in a thrilling 43-40 come-from-behind victory over the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers.
“We've proven we can come back, so we can just stop that now — and play some football, and not have to worry about coming from behind any more,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “But we did show a lot of heart Friday night, but we need to get after it early and quit getting so far behind.”
