Pocola teams suffer losses to Kiowa in CNT semis

TALIHINA — It was a rough evening of semifinal action for the Pocola High School basketball teams Thursday in the championship semifinals of the 2013 Choctaw Nation Tournament on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium. Both teams lost to Kiowa.
The Indians lost a heart-breaking 54-52 loss to the Cowboys, while the Cowgirls outlasted the Lady Indians 61-42.

Poteau Pirates fall in Class 4A state title game

Albeit 63 years after making their second state title appearance, the Poteau Pirates were hoping that the third time would be a charm in capturing the gold ball. It didn't happen.
Class 4A's top-ranked Anadarko Warriors showed why they're the No. 1 team in the state as they dominated the Pirates 40-0 to win the Class 4A state title game Saturday afternoon at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium.

Poteau wrestlers open season with win over Van Buren

The 2013-14 season got started in fine fashion for the Poteau Pirates wrestling team — an undermanned squad at that.
Still missing some matmen who are playing this afternoon in the Class 4A state title football game, the Pirates still were able to open their season on the mat with a 42-36 win over the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers on Thursday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.

Howe, Keota to square off in Lions lair for GVC title; trophy games set for today, tonight in Panama

BOKOSHE — There willl be some Lions to win the 2013 Green Valley Conference Tournament tonight at the Panama High School Gym. The only question will be the champions hail from Howe or Keota.
Both Lions teams won their championship semifinals Thursday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse. Howe beat Arkoma 71-48, while Keota defeated Cameron 71-56.
Howe (8-0) and Keota will meet at 8:30 tonight at Panama for the championship, while the Mustangs (3-1) and the Yellowjackets (5-2) will play for third place at 3:30 this afternoon in Panama.

Although it's been 63 years between the Poteau Pirates football team's second and third appearances in the state title game, the Pirates are indeed hoping third time will be the charm.
For the first time since coming in state runner-up in 1950, the Pirates (12-1) will once again play for a gold ball this afternoon as they will meet the top-ranked Anadarko Warriors (13-0) for the Class 4A state title at 1 p.m. at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium. The game will be televised live on FoxSports Oklahoma.

Talihina falls to No. 1 Ringling 26-18 in state semifinals Friday night

DURANT — The Talihina Golden Tigers football team lost only once in 2013, but it came in the state semifinals to end their season.
Class A's top-ranked Ringling Blue Devils held off the Golden Tigers 26-18 in the state semifinals Friday night at Paul Laird Field on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
The Golden Tigers end their season at 13-1.
Talihina scored with 8:18 left to play in the game to cut the deficit to 26-18, but the Golden Tigers never got the ball back.

Poteau girls, Spiro boys make finals at Wilburton Tournament

WILBURTON — There was LeFlore County representation in both title games of the Wilburton Tournament on Friday night.
Both the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Spiro Bulldogs won their championship semifinal contests rather easily to advance to Friday night's title games.
The Lady Pirates handled the host Lady Diggers 65-27, while the ’Dogs did likewise to the Stigler Panthers by the score of 87-41.

Talihina school damaged in winter storm

Last weekend's icy storm caused moderate damage to the roof of the Talihina High School building, leaving a classroom ceiling caved in and unsafe conditions in two hallway restrooms.
"I'd been out over the weekend looking around, checking for damage," said Talihina Superintendent Jason Lockhart, "but the issues on the roof weren't visible from the ground. It wasn't until we went inside on Tuesday to check the heating and light systems that we discovered that the ceiling had caved in."

Talihina finally gets to play state semifinal game against Ringling tonight in Durant

It probably seems like it was not going to ever happen, but it is — the Class A state semifinals in the high school football playoffs.
The Talihina Golden Tigers (13-0) will get a shot at the state's top-ranked team in Class A, the Ringling Blue Devils (11-1), at 7 tonight in the state semifinals at Paul Laird Field on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant.
The winner will meet the Apache-Hollis state semifinal next weekend at Oklahoma State University's Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater. for the state championship.

Heavener boys get first win of basketball season, down Hartford; Lady Wolves play Saturday afternoon for title of Gary Ford Invitational

HARTFORD, Ark. — The Heavener Wolves basketball team won its first game of the season Wednesday night, beating host Hartford 55-51 in a consolation game of the Gary Ford Invitational. The game was to have been played the previous Dec. 5, but was canceled due to last week's wintry weather.
The Heavener Lady Wolves will play at noon Saturday for the championship of the tournament.
The championship game was to have been last Saturday, but it, too, was canceled due to inclement weather.
