I hope you all made it through last week's ice storm. We watched a lot of football, and we went sledding every afternoon. Jarrett Lilley won the long-distance contest for 2013 this year, followed by Jon Pickel â€” but Jon did use special additives on his sled's bottom like Clark Griswold to aid his speed and distance. At Jon's age, you got to do everything you can to gain an advantage!

If you hang out at Tote-A-Poke for just five minutes, you'll hear someone tell a Bob Free story, especially if Phillip Zearley is there.
BOKOSHE â€” The Cameron Yellowjackets, the Howe Lions and the Arkoma Mustangs all posted victories in opening-round action of the 2013 Green Valley Conference Tournament on Wednesday at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.
Cameron edged Panama 56-53, Arkoma rallied to down Wister 50-42 and Howe handled host Bokoshe 93-28. Keota routed McCurtain 64-30 in the other opening-round game.
TALIHINA â€” The Pocola High School basketball teams won their openers in the 2013 Choctaw Nation Tournament on Wednesday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
Both teams beat Sallisaw-Central, as the Lady Indians won 44-33 and the Indians routed the Tigers 72-46.
Both Pocola teams played in the championship semifinals on Thursday. The Indians (2-0) and the Lady Indians (1-1) faced Kiowa, with the winners playing for the title at 7 p.m. [girls] and 8:30 p.m. [boys] on Saturday. The losers will play for third place at 4:20 p.m. [girls] and 5:40 p.m. [boys] on Saturday.
WILBURTON â€” The Spiro Lady Bulldogs were hoping to make it to tonight's title game of the Wilburton Tournament. However, the Red Oak Lady Eagles had other ideas.
The Lady Eagles flew past the Lady Bulldogs 60-36 in the championship semifinals Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) will play for third place at 4 p.m. Friday against the loser of Thursday night's Poteau-Wilburton game. The Lady Eagles will play the Poteau-Wilburton winner for the championship at 7 p.m. Friday.
All Poteau Pirate fans who will be in town to see the high school football team head out for a state championship battle in Stillwater Saturday are encouraged gather for a grand send-off.
On Friday at about 12:45 fans are asked to line Broadway from Shockleyâ€™s Auto Sales to the Choctaw Travel Plaza, donning Pirate colors of red, white and black.
Two LeFlore County high Schools, Whitesboro and Leflore, saw their Tuesday night basketball games canceled due to weather problems.
The Whitesboro teams were to have entertained Panola, but the games were postponed as Whitesboro was still out of school due to the effects of last week's wintry storm. In fact, Whitesboro Public Schools were out Wednesday for the same reason. No make-up date of these games has been set.
The Poteau Pirates will play in the Class 4A state championship game Saturday afternoon in Stillwater. My family and I are planning on going to watch Clint and Candeedaâ€™s little brother, Cord Lawrence, and the rest of the Pirates play for the state title. Go Big Red!

Gun season has passed again, and I had a good one this year â€” even though I did not kill a big buck. I did get to hunt with friends and family, which is very important to me.

WILBURTON â€” Finally, the seasons got underway for the Poteau Lady Pirates and the Spiro teams Wednesday at the Wilburton Tournament. All three opened the season victoriously.
After a slow start, the Lady Pirates handled the Hartshorne Lady Miners 60-43 in the first game of the day.
BOKOSHE â€” The Arkoma Lady Mustangs, the host Bokoshe Lady Tigers, the Howe Lady Lions and the Panama Lady Razorbacks posted opening-round victories in the 2013 Green Valley Conference Tournament on Tuesday at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.
The Lady Mustangs corraled the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 75-50, the Lady Tigers got past the Wister Lady Wildcats 57-46, Howe routed Keota 82-39 in a battle of Lady Lions and the Lady â€™Backs beat the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets 56-25.
The Poteau Pirates wrestling team may not be at full strength yet due to several wrestlers on the football team that's going for the state title Saturday afternoon, but the ones who are out will begin their season with their home opener against the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The junior high dual will begin at 6 p.m.
