POTEAU RELAY FOR LIFE

All cancer survivors are invited to take part as special guests in the opening ceremonies of the LeFlore County Relay for Life on Sept. 7 at Costner Stadium.
Survivors and their caregivers are ask to arrive around 5:30 p.m. and register in the survivors are for refreshments and fellowship, organizers said.
They also are invited to take part in the commemorative survivor lap that begins every Relay for Life.
Teams of fundraisers remain through the night, with at least one member walking the track. The top fundraisers are recognized.

Police search for driver who reportedly fled from accident

August 28, 2013

Members of the Poteau Police Department and the LeFlore County Sheriff's Department searched for the driver involved in a single car accident on Old Oklahoma highway 112 Wednesday about 4 p.m. Poteau police said a man believed to be the driver of the vehicle was seen by witnesses running into nearby woods just after the accident happened. Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

Cyclist injured in Heavener accident

August 28, 2013

A man on a bicycle was injured Wednesday afternoon after he was struck by a Maroon SUV. According to Heavener Police, the man was traveling north on U.S. highway 59 and was struck by the southbound SUV at an intersection near Marvin's IGA. Police said they are still investigating the accident. The injured man was taken to the hospital with head, neck and leg injuries.

Country music legend to perform in Poteau

Country music legend Gene Watson will perform at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau on Nov. 2.
Doors will be open to the public at 6:00 pm with concert starting at 7:30 pm. All proceeds will benefit Heavener Runestone Park to help keep it open and free for the public.

RED OAK — A big inning broke open a close game as the Poteau Lady Pirates defeated the Red Oak Lady Eagles 7-1 on Monday afternoon.
After the Lady Pirates (7-4) broke a 1-all tie with single runs in the fourth and sixth innings for a 3-1 lead, Poteau scored four runs in the seventh inning to win going away.
Wister 5, Whitesboro 4: In Wister, the Lady Wildcats rallied from a 4-0 deficit with a single run in the first inning and four runs in the sixth inning.
Cameron 3, Keota 1: In Cameron, a two-run fifth inning broke a 1-all tie for the Lady Yellowjackets.

WISTER — The week of baseball got off on the right foot for the Wister Wildcats on Monday as they dominated the McCurtain Bulldogs twice, winning by scores of 12-0 and 15-0.
Scotty Gibson got the win as he threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 batters.
Seth Shelton got his first win of the season in the nightcap as he followed Gibson's no-hitter up with one of his own to go with four strikeouts.
Leflore 13, Battiest 1: In Battiest, the Savages jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning and never looked back.

Poteau cross country girls first, boys third at Haworth Invitational

IDABEL — The 2013 high school cross country season got off to a good start for the Poteau High School teams in Monday's season-opening Haworth Invitational at the Idabel Golf Course.
The Lady Pirates were first, and had the top two finishers and five of the top 13.
The Pirates were third, and had three of the top 15 placers.
The Poteau runners will return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday at the University of Tulsa Invitational.

WESTVILLE — The Heavener Lady Wolves used a big inning to down the Westville Lady Yellowjackets 11-4 Friday afternoon.
Leading 6-5 after six innings, the Lady Wolves erupted for six runs in the seventh inning to put the game away.
Whitesboro 16, Panola 1: In Panola, Whitesboro pitcher Lexey Branscum threw a no-hitter as she struck out five batters in the three-inning, run-rule contest, and aided her own cause with two runs batted in and two runs scored.

Red Oak boys handle Cameron to win CASC Classic; pitcher has perfect game for Eagles; Wister boys rally past Crowder to take third place

CAMERON — The Red Oak Eagles baseball team flew into LeFlore County and left with the championship plaque of the 18th annual Carl Albert State College Classic.
The Eagles, who reached the title game with a 12-1 semifinal victory over the Wister Wildcats on Friday, handled this year's host team, the Cameron Yellowjackets 13-0 in four innings Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets reached the title game with a 7-6 victory over the Crowder Demons on Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats did end the tournament on a high note as they beat the Demons 10-5 to take home the third-place plaque.

Whitesboro boys suffer losses in final two games of own tournament

August 27, 2013

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Bulldogs baseball team had a rough end to its own tournament.
The ’Dogs lost 12-0 to Boswell in Friday's semifinals of the Whitesboro Tournament, then fell 11-3 to Battiest in the third-place game.
