Tuesday's rain washes out softball, baseball openers

While the rain showers which fell on LeFlore County were welcomed, they weren't by local high school fast-pitch softball and baseball teams.
Three softball and four baseball teams saw their season-openers rained out Tuesday afternoon.
Softball games rained out were Poteau at Pryor and Heavener and Smithville at Whitesboro, and none of them have been rescheduled at this time.
On the baseball diamond, games which fell victim to Tuesday's rain were Cameron at Wister, Panola at Leflore and Howe at McCurtain, with none of the games rescheduled.

Benjamin Spencer “Buddy” Gossett, 59, of Heavener died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, in the Memorial Park Cemetery Pavilion under the direction of Dowden Funeral Home.

Sue Bryant, 65, of Spiro died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. Services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel in Spiro. Burial will be in Nubbin Rudge Cemetery.

Clifton Edward “Joe” Barnes, 84, of Heavener died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark.
No services are scheduled at this time. Dowden Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Talihina Bash continues to be a success

The Talihina Chamber of Commerce hosted the sixth annual Back-to-School Bash Family Fun Time on Friday.
"The fun started a little late because just about time for it to start the rain came down," said Chamber Manager Vera Nelson.
Even though it started off a little damp the kids had a great time  bouncing on the inflatables, swimming in the swimming pool, receiving school supply goody bags and food and cold Drinks.
Donations from businesses helped keep the cost down making this event possible for the children to enjoy, Nelson said.

LeFlore County Museum announces opening

After more than two years, the LeFlore County Museum located at the Hotel Lowrey on Dewey Avenue in Poteau has opened its doors to the public.
After many months or preparing the exhibits in room on the second and third floors, as well as the revolving exhibit located downstairs in the recently dedicated Arlene LeMaster Gallery Room, museum officials announced their official business hours.
History lovers will be able to visit the museum Tuesday-Thursday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

EOMC facing penalties

Beginning Oct. 1, Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center will be one of 2,225 hospitals nationwide to be penalized by the Centers For Medicare and Medicaid Services as part of the Affordable Care Act program targeting hospital readmission rates, according to CMS.
“Thirty-day readmissions have been a problem identified by CMS for a hospital performance improvement,” said EOMC CEO Mike Carter. “It was estimated that one in five Medicare beneficiaries were readmitted within 30 days of the initial admission and discharge.”

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the New Talihina Cemetery with Gary McCutchan officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Talihina Funeral Home.

Services will be held at noon Wednesday, Aug. 14, in the Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Forest park Cemetery, Fort Smith, Ark.
