TULSA — Many father-son relationships also involve a coach-player connection. Such is the case between Poteau football coach Greg Werner and his son Jay Werner.
Having played under the tutelage of his father throughout his high school career, Jay Werner got to play one more game with his dad as head coach in the All-State game Friday night at Union-Tuttle Stadium, as they served in those capacities with the East squad.
TULSA — Trevor Crone wore a football uniform for the last time Friday night when he played in the All-State game at Union-Tuttle Stadium.
Crone, a Talihina standout, will be moving on to play baseball at Connor State College in Warner.
But he made his last shot on the gridiron memorable.
“The first hit I had was an eye opener,” Crone said. “It made me realize I am really small to be playing the game, but I still have a lot of heart and I enjoy playing.”

Cody Linder Riley, 19, of Howe, was charged by the LeFlore County District Attorney's Office on Friday with assault and battery on a detention officer and a second charge of assault and battery stemming from an incident on July 18.
According to the affidavit, detention officer Kevin Knight heard a noise coming from a holding cell and when he went to investigate he saw Riley kicking another inmate who was lying on his bed in his side.
Can you believe that the 2013 fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons are just about here — as is the start of football practice? It all starts Aug. 13 for most, with the exception of the teams playing in the inaugural Pocola Tournament — which will start Aug. 12, and its bracket will appear in next Saturday's edition.
To get warmed up for the softball action, the annual Panama Lady Back Scrimmage Festival will begin Thursday and end next Saturday, and I'll have the schedule listed at the end of this column.
