Arthur Benjamin Bethell of Poteau died Jan. 20, 2014, in Poteau. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Bethell; mother, Maud “Mattie” Bethell; two brothers, Noel and Arnold Bethell; two sisters, Melba Treadway and Mildred Hamby; a daughter, Sharon Bethell Reasoner, and his special dog, Smokie.

Johnny Lee Martin

Johnny Lee Martin, 69, of Panama died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. Johnny was born July 17, 1944, in Panama to Arlin Thiral and Estella Marie (Ornder) Martin. He was a forklift driver for Whirlpool. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marvin Martin.

Filing period set for Howe, Talihina elections

Candidates for municipal offices in Talihina and Howe may file declarations of candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 27.
The filing period ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, said Sharon Steele, County Election Board secretary.
Offices open for candidates include:
• Talihina, clerk-treasurer, unexpired term.
• Howe, Board of trustees seat, unexpired term, and clerk-treasurer, unexpired term.
The offices at stake will be filled in a nonpartisan special municipal election on April 1.

Poteau School District bond issue vote nearing

In a response to the growing need of the district to continue to provide quality services to students, the Poteau School District will propose a $1.615 million bond issue for a vote on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
The bond issue will replace an expiring bond and will create no additional taxes, according to Superintendent Don Sjoberg.
The voters will decide whether to support two propositions — $640,000 for transportation and $975,000 for building improvements.

ATOKA — The Poteau Pirates suffered a 70-38 setback to the Atoka Wampus Cats on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Fieldhouse.
The Pirates fell behind 17-11 after a period and never got over the hump.
Cameron 71, Arkoma 65, OT: Friday night in Arkoma, the Yellowjackets rallied to force overtime tied at 59, then outscored the Mustangs in the extra session 12-6 to complete the comeback.
Howe 97, Bokoshe 24: Friday night in Bokoshe, the Lions jumped out to a 19-1 lead after a period and never looked back.

ATOKA — The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered a 45-43 road loss to the Atoka Lady Wampus Cats on Saturday afternoon at Kelley Fieldhouse. The Lady Cats had a 14-10 lead after a period and never lost the lead, although the Lady Pirates cut the deficit to two points at the end of each half.
Arkoma 67, Cameron 46: Friday night in Arkoma, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to an 18-11 lead after a period.
Howe 79, Bokoshe 26: Friday night in Bokoshe, the Lady Lions, leading 10-7 after a period, outscored the Lady Tigers in the second quarter 20-9 for a 30-16 halftime lead.

Spiro teams sweep Poteau

SPIRO — The Poteau Lady Pirates held a 32-30 lead going into the final quarter, but Spiro's Carleigha Thompson took over the game. Thompson only scored six points in the final quarter, but she had at least five pinpoint assists in the final half of the quarter to help the Lady Bulldogs win the game by the score of 49-41 Friday night at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.

Poteau Football Awards Banquet Sunday night

Poteau Pirates football players, coaches and fans got another chance to relive the magical 2013 season at the Poteau Pirates Football Awards Banquet, which took place Sunday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Several players were given special honors. Senior quarterback Jace Pitchford was named the Most Valuable Player, while sophomore running back Roger Barcheers was named the Offensive MVP for the Pirates, who went 12-2, won District 4A-4 and were state runners-up.
