Area eagles become stars of tourism documentary

A Discover Oklahoma filming crew program flocked to Wister Lake State Park Thursday to film footage of an eagle habitat as part of an upcoming show.
The documentary will be televised Feb. 15 on about eight stations spanning from Witchita, Kan., to Denision, Texas, and includes KWTV channel 9 in Oklahoma City, KOTV channel 6 in Tulsa and KSWO channel 7 in Lawton.

Fire departments battle multiple grass fires

Stong winds and warmer temperatures were nothing but kindling for wildfires across LeFlore County Thursday.
Grass fires burst out in several areas across the county, sending Arkoma, Pocola and Murry Spur other fire departments in the southern part of the county into the brush to contain flames pushed by winds gusting up to 40 mph.
According to the National Weather Service, which issued a very high fire danger alert for several counties in southeast Oklahoma, including LeFlore, and northwest Arkansas, conditions are highly favorable to spur wildfires.

Poteau teams sweep Sallisaw

The Poteau High School basketball teams swept home games from Sallisaw on Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, but it wasn't easy. The Lady Pirates actually trailed by a point in the second half, but ended up winning 63-51 over the Lady Black Diamonds. The boys also had to withstand a charge by the Black Diamonds before winning 52-39.

PANAMA — The only loss the Howe Lady Lions have suffered came in the semifinals of last month's Green Valley Conference Tournament to the Panama Lady Razorbacks. The Lady Lions avenged that loss, and did so on the Lady ’Backs' court with a 57-49 win Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions jumped out to an 11-5 lead after a period en route to a 27-15 halftime advantage.
Arkoma 67, Wister 40: Tuesday night in Arkoma, the Lady Mustangs rallied from a 13-10 first-quarter deficit to get the come-from-behind victory.

High School Boys Basketball Roundup

ARKOMA — The Arkoma Mustangs were able to outlast the visiting Wister Wildcats for a 51-42 victory Tuesday night at the Arkoma Gym.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 7-6 lead after a period and slowly increased their lead from there.
Howe 80, Panama 36: Tuesday night in Panama, the Lions kept their record unblemished, thanks to a 22-7 lead after a period.
Talihina 61, Pocola 53: Tuesday night in Pocola, the Golden Tigers, winners of three straight, rallied from a 25-18 halftime deficit by outscoring the Indians by 13 points, 43-30, in the second half to get the come-from-behind win.

Katrina Clemons, 46, of Talihina died Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, in Talihina.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at Christ’s  Church in Lenox. Burial will be in Whitesboro Cemetery under the direction of Burkhart Funeral Service, Talihina.

Irene Sue Ray

Irene Sue Ray, 59, of New Blaine, Ark., died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock, Ark. She was born Sept. 25,1954 in Spokane, Wash., to Ralph and Ruby Shaw Starr. She was a homemaker and mother and loved being outside, putting puzzles together, watching movies and most of all spending time with her family and grandkids. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Larry Bowden; and father of her children, Billy Pritchard.
