The countdown to Poteauopoly has begun

The clock is ticking as Poteau Chamber of Commerce members prepare for the annual banquet to be held tonight [Feb. 27] at 6 p.m.
Those in attendance will be treated to dinner and live entertainment as several area chamber members take to the stage in what still remains a surprise show.
Poteauopoly will be in full swing as banquet goers try to stay out of jail and collect the most properties.
With 700 tickets available, the Chamber announced this morning they were sold-out and no more tickets are available.

Crowder gets second straight sweep of CASC softball team; Lady Vikings home today against Fort Scott, Kan.

NEOSHO, Mo. — For the second straight outing, the Carl Albert State College softball team got swept at the hands of Crowder College on Tuesday afternoon. Crowder run ruled Carl Albert twice, 13-4 and 10-2.
The Lady Vikings will entertain Fort Scott, Kan., in a doubleheader beginning at 1 this afternoon.

Carl Albert baseball team takes two from University of Ozarks JV; Vikings play Sunday twinbill against ECU JV in Ada

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. — The Carl Albert State College baseball team got its second straight sweep this week as the Vikings took two from the University of the Ozarks junior varsity on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings took the opener 4-1, then run ruled the hosts 10-1 in five innings in the nightcap.
The Vikings will return to action Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. road doubleheader against the East Central University JV in Ada.

Leflore boys regional champs, knocking on state's door; Savages meet Red Oak Eagles Friday night for area title, trip to state; season ends for Leflore Lady Savages

CLEVELAND, Okla. — The Leflore Savages can be the county's first team to make the state tournament.
The Savages will meet the Red Oak Eagles at 8 p.m. Friday in Sand Springs for the Class B Area Tournament championship. However, the loser can still make state the next night in the consolation championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
The Savages got to the position of being a win away from making state by winning the Class B Regional Tournament on Saturday night, downing Cave Springs 59-47.

Condoleezza Rice, Former Secretary of State, Speaking at U of A on March 5

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Condoleezza Rice, former U.S. secretary of state under President George W. Bush, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in Barnhill Arena. The lecture is free, open to the public, and no tickets are needed to attend. The event is part of the student-funded Distinguished Lecture Series at the University of Arkansas.

Poteau senior boys don't want to end home career with a loss; Pirates, Lady Pirates in regional tournament Thursday against Hilldale

The Poteau Pirates basketball team won its final home game of the regular season on Feb. 18 over Heavener. Now, the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association has blessed the Pirates with one last home game, a 3 p.m. Class 4A Regional Tournament consolation quarterfinal game against the Hilldale Hornets Thursday afternoon at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The Lady Pirates will play the Lady Hornets in the championship semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Cameron softball player signs with Carl Albert

CAMERON — Earlier this year, Carl Albert State College softball coach David Holt signed Poteau's RaeLynn Caldwell and Panama's Stephanie Barcheers. Holt made it 3-for-3 in LeFlore County on Monday afternoon when he signed Cameron senior Kacey McGee in a ceremony inside the high school.

Lori Lea Hopcraft

Lori Lea Hopcraft, 48, died Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
Lori was born March 29, 1965, in Olney, Ill., to Calvin Phillip Hopcraft and Patsy Ruth Coggins Hopcraft. She graduated with the Class of 1983 from Pearland High School, Pearland, Texas, and was a librarian for many years, in Pearland.
Lori was preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Patsy Hopcraft, and one brother, Barton Hopcraft. She is survived by her brother, Calvin Phillip Hopcraft II and his family of Jenks.

Leflore, Whitesboro boys can make state on Friday night

Right now, LeFlore County has 18 high school teams left in the basketball playoffs. Two of those teams, the Leflore Savages and the Whitesboro Bulldogs, can be state qualifiers by the end of Friday night.
The Savages will play Red Oak at 8 p.m. Friday in Sand Springs in the area tournament, with the winner making the Class B State Tournament. The loser will still have a shot at state the next night by winning the consolation championship.
