Poteau teams sweep Hilldale in regional openers; Lady Pirates play Fort Gibson Saturday night for championship, automatically headed for area tournament; Pirates stay alive

The true final games at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse for the 2013-14 season ended with the desired results. The Poteau High School basketball teams swept Hilldale in their Class 4A Regional Tournament openers on Thursday.
The Lady Pirates made it to Saturday night's regional finals with a 61-56 win over the Lady Hornets, while the Pirates stayed alive with a 46-36 victory over the Hornets.

Arkoma girls seek state berth Saturday night; season ends for Mustangs with loss to Roff Tigers on Thursday night

DURANT — In the 2010-11 season, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs won the 2011 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament. Now, those players are juniors, and have a shot a making state tonight.
The Lady Mustangs defeated the Allen Lady Mustangs 65-53 in the Class A Area Tournament consolation semifinals Friday afternoon Southeastern Oklahoma State University's Bloomer Sulllivan Fieldhouse.

Not only does March mean “March Madness” for basketball, it also means high school baseball and slow-pitch softball begins. In fact, it begins Saturday as Cameron's baseball team visits Muldrow.

Betty Jean Odom, 89, of Spiro died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel. Buiral will be in Spiro City Cemetery. Family visitation will from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert “Tony Bird” Massey, 66, of Pocola died Monday, Feb.y 24, 2014, in Pocola.
  Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, at Evans Memorial Chapel, Pocola. Burial will be in Laird Cemetery, Pocola. The family will receive guests at Evans and Miller Funeral home in Pocola from 3-5 p.m. Sunday.

Former Talihina standouts making impacts at CASC

Two former Talihina High School basketball players, Jordan EagleRoad and Tara Hawkins, have been making their presence felt this season on the hardwood.
Watching EagleRoad helps you to understand the impact that he has had for the Vikings the second half of the season. EagleRoad, a 6-2 freshman has the ability to knock down 3-point baskets, drive to the basket and get fouled where he is a very successful free-throw shooter.
Watching Hawkins, a 5-9 freshman wing player, helps you to understand how she has had such a huge impact for the Lady Vikings in so many areas.

It's time to motorcross race

OK all of you adrenaline junkies, it's time to fire up your motorcycles and motorbikes, four-wheelers and side-by-sides and get ready to race.
The first race at RaceDay Park Mx is less than a month away. The park is located just six miles northeast of Poteau on Oklahoma State Highway 112.

Kenneth Joe Rose, of Muse died Feb. 22, 2014. Kenneth was born on July 31, 1929, in Whitesboro to Oscar and Pearl Smith Rose. He had three brothers, Ralph Rose, Ernest Rose and Elmer Rose, five sisters, Gladys James, Opal Norvell, Audrey Juarez, Norma Jean Fields and Jo Griffith.

Wilburton receives funding to improve community

The City of Wilburton was awarded a $300 grant by Keep Oklahoma Beautiful (KOB) to support their “Wilburton Cleanup” effort this Spring as part of KOB's Great American Cleanup™. 

The Great American Cleanup™ is the nation’s largest annual cleanup, beautification and community improvement program. An estimated 60,000 Oklahomans join KOB for this year’s cleanup efforts. This national program of Keep America Beautiful is sponsored in Oklahoma by Devon Energy and coordinated by KOB.
