Poteau girls handle Panama in softball season opener

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team got its season off and running in fine fashion with a 10-2 four-inning, run-rule victory over the Panama Lady Razorbacks on Thursday afternoon.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves handled both home opponents in Thursday's three-way, run-ruling Cameron 18-0 and Battiest 17-4.
Battiest beat Cameron 14-6 in the middle contest.
In Heavener's win over Cameron, the Lady Wolves scored 10 runs in the opening inning to put the game away.
In Heavener's victory over Battiest, the Lady Wolves rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit with six runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning and six more runs in the third inning.

Poteau soccer teams split road games against Van Buren

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Poteau High School soccer teams split their games Thursday against the host Van Buren squads. The Pirates prevailed 4-1, but the Lady Pirates fell 3-1.
The Poteau teams will be in the Fort Smith [Ark.] Invitational, which started Friday and will end today in Greenwood, Ark.

PANAMA — The duo of Tristan Thompson and Nikita Bershirs combined on a no-hitter as the Panama Razorbacks blanked the Arkoma Mustangs 15-0 in three innings.
Thompson threw the first two innings with six strikeouts, then Bershirs pitched the third inning with three Ks.
The Hogs scored 14 runs in the first inning to put the game away.
Cameron 5, Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside JV 4: In Fort Smith, Ark., the Yellowjackets got their first win of the season Thursday afternoon as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning, then upped the advantage to 3-0 in the second inning.

Heavener, Leflore boys get wins in Smithville Tournament; Wolves, Savages meet in this morning's semifinals

SMITHVILLE — The Heavener Wolves and the Leflore Savages won their opening-round games in the Smithville Tournament on Thursday. The Wolves beat the host Braves 5-3, while the Savages blanked the Fort Towson Tigers 8-0.
The Wolves and the Savages will meet in this morning's semifinals at 9 a.m.
Wister, the other local team in the field, will play its semifinal contest at 11 this morning.
