Tuesday's High School Baseball Roundup

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Poteau Pirates baseball team finally got to play some baseball in “The Sunshine State” on Tuesday, beating Van Meter, Iowa, 3-2, but losing 6-1 to Faith Baptist, Fla.
Heavener 10, Stuart 2; Heavener 7, Roland 0: In Heavener, the Wolves ran their record to 8-0 with the two wins.
In the victory over Class B's seventh-ranked Hornets, Dillion May got the complete-game victory.
In the win over the Rangers, Colby McGee got the complete-game shutout.

Spiro boys go 2-0 in Spring Break Festival

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team won both games played in Tuesday's Eastern Oklahoma Spring Break Festival, outlasting both Beggs 9-6 and Salina 20-12.

Lady Viking makes Region II's Women's All-Tournament Team

Carl Albert State College Lady Viking, and former Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside Lady Bear, Kilah Cummings, a 5-9 freshman power forward has been named to the Region II All-Tournament Team.
“Kilah is really well deserving of this honor,” CASC women's coach Jeff Tadtman said. “She had a really great year for us. Kilah was really one of the dominant players in the tournament.”

Bobby Gerald “Bob” Wann

Bobby Gerald “Bob” Wann, 72, formerly of Fanshawe died Friday, March 7, 2014, in Big Sandy, Texas.
Graveside services, open to friends and family, will be held will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 24, in Summerfield Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Colorado Epilepsy Foundation in Bob Wann’s name are suggested to support his grandson, Benjamin, who has battled epilepsy since age 2.

Mary Ellen Tidwell, 69, died Monday, March 17, 2014, in Oklahoma City.
Services willl be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, at the Talihina School Auditorium. Burial will be in New Talihina Cemetery under the direction of Burkhart Funeral Service, Talihina.

Lovaun Shelton Goin

Lovaun Shelton Goin, 78, of Poteau died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. 
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Maxey Cemetery, Wister. The family will visit with relatives and friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Ramona LaNell (Lee) Mitchell

Ramona Mitchell, 85, of Wister died March 15, 2014, in Wister. She was born July 17, 1928, in Poteau to James Harvey and Verlan (Neal) Lee. She was a retired school teacher.
Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Mitchell; daughter, Sherry Ann Brown; grandson, Rusty Brown; four brothers, Ed, Earnest, James and Billy Lee.

William Alton Shelton

William Alton Shelton of Poteau was born July 4, 1938, in Tucker Knob to Vera Angeline (Jennings) and Raleigh Edmond Shelton Sr. and died March 19, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was 75.
He is survived by a daughter, Melinda Cagle of Poteau; son, William Andrew Shelton of Bokoshe; three sisters, Lillian Lois Etter of Stigler, Shirley Byrum of Kinta, Sharon Pearce and husband, Don, of Coweta; three brothers, Tommy Shelton of Kinta, Joe Shelton and wife, Sherry, of Oklahoma City, Bob Shelton of Quinton; three grandchildren, William Aaron Shelton, Olivia Cagle and Derek Cagle.

Local basketball players make All-Arklahoma Basketball Dream Team; three hoopsters, Arkoma coach nab special honors

FORT SMITH, Ark. — Several local high school basketball players and a local coach were named to the All-Arklahoma Basketball Dream Team, which was announced at a banquet Monday night.
Three players and a coach got special honors. Arkoma girls coach Connie Ray was named the Girls Coach of the Year after guiding the Lady Mustangs to the Class A State Tournament earlier this month for the first time in 22 years.
Ray's player, junior guard Abby Gragg, was given the Sportsmanship Award.

What a season is was for LeFlore County basketball

Although each of the four LeFlore County High School basketball teams that made state lost in the quarterfinals, that doesn't dampen the success there was on the hardwood this past season.
Arkoma's girls, Howe's boys and the Spiro teams made state to cap what was a very good season of county hoops.
