Howe boys regional champs, one win away from state tournament; Lady Lions, Pocola boys regional runners-up; season ends for Panama girls

TAHLEQUAH — The Howe Lions find themselves one win away from making next week's Class 2A State Tournament.
The Lions handled the Pocola Indians 75-56 in the regional tournament title game Saturday night in the third meeting between the two county schools
The Lions will meet the Preston Pirates at 8 p.m. Friday at the Muskogee Civic Center in the Class 2A Area Tournament for the right to make state. The loser will have a second shot at making state in the consolation finals at 8 p.m. Saturday.

ADA — The Whitesboro Bulldogs had already made school history by winning the school's first-ever regional championship, thus they were needing only one win at last weekend's Class B Area Tournament at Ada High School's Cougar Activity Center to make this week's state tournament. Unfortunately for them, it didn't happen.
The Bulldogs lost Friday night's area final 39-34 to Southwest Covenant, then fell in Saturday's consolation finals 40-31 to Lookeba-Sickles.

For the second and third straight days, Mother Nature was the big winner of outdoor high school and college athletic events.
Remnants from Sunday's sleet storm caused games to be canceled Tuesday and today.
High school baseball games canceled today were Pocola at Talihina, Wister at Spiro, Providence Academy at Arkoma, Eagletown at Howe, Leflore at Panola and Panama at Keota.

Frances Hollan, 56, of Wister died Sunday, March 2, 2014, in Wister. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Leflore Baptist Church in Leflore. Burial will be in Leflore Cemetery. 
Family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Edith Anderson, 97, of Albion died Saturday, March 1, 2014, at her home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Albion First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Albion Cemetery under the direction of Burkhart Funeral Service, Talihina.

Helen Pendleton, 90, of Wister died March 1, 2014, in Poteau. She was born Nov. 5, 1923, in Port Arthur, Texas, to Henry Quellar and Maria (Jaurequi) Martinez. She was a retired certified nurses aide and cashier.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband Gene Pendleton; son, Joseph Ascencio; and sister, Sara Anaya.

Lucille D. Olive, 96, of Poteau died Sunday, March 2, 2014, in Poteau. Lucille was born December 27, 1917 in Bengal to Joe and Grace (Walling) Davis. She was a beautician. Lucille was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Ann “Pat” Olive of Santa Rosa, Calif.; four nieces, Nadine Brissey, Karen Cole, Susan Davis, Adeana Kracke; five nephews, Larry Joe Curry, Joe Russell Davis, Mike Davis and David Davis, John Davis; other relatives and loved ones.

Emily Gail Cox, 6, of Cameron died March 1, 2014, in Tulsa. She was born June 19, 2007, in Oklahoma City, to Shane and Angela (Pendergrass) Cox.
Emily is survived by her parents, Shane and Angela Cox of the home; twin sister, Ashley Cox, sister, Makayla Cox both of the home; brother, Wade Cox of the home; maternal grandparents, William and Kathy Pendergrass of Poteau; paternal grandparents, Joe and Saundra Cox of Cameron; and many more family members, friends and loved ones.

Poteau soccer teams' season openers vs. Greenwood canceled; girls' game rescheduled for Thursday; boys game not rescheduled yet (UPDATED)

The Poteau Pirates soccer team was planning on beginning the defense of its 2013 Class 4A state championship, but they will have to wait until another day. The Lady Pirates are in the same boat.
Today's season openers at home against Greenwood, Ark., have been canceled due inclement weather.
The girl's game has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, but Poteau girls coach Jim Erwin said the contest could be moved to Greenwood. A decision may not come until Wednesday, since both schools were out today due to inclement weather.

Mother Nature spoils Monday's baseball, SP softball games; Poteau softball games canceled this week due to basketball playoffs

Sunday afternoon's sleeting show played havoc with Monday's high school baseball and slow-pitch softball games.
Monday baseball games canceled were Fort Gibson at Poteau, Hartshorne at Cameron, Arkoma at Panama and Pocola at Oktaha.
Monday softball games canceled were Bokoshe and Porum at Wister, Warner at Panama, Heavener and Broken Bow at Smithville and Spiro at Keota.
As of now, all of these games will try to be rescheduled except two softball match-ups — Warner at Panama and Heavener and Broken Bow at Smithville.
