It's time to carnival

Ed Burlingame's Pride Amusements began getting rides ready Thursday [March 6] for tonight's grand opening. Gates open at 6 p.m.
The carnival is located in the vacant lot north of Car-Mart in Poteau.

School Board meeting to discuss school year, land purchase, superintendent contract

Several items are slated to be discussed during the Poteau Board of Educations regular meeting Monday, March 10, at 6 p.m. at the Bert Corr Administration Building.
The 2014/15 school calendar will be discussed as well as an executive session that lists discussion on the purchase of land and discussion of the details of the superintendents contract.

Weekend action slated for CASC softball, baseball teams

The weekend slate of action for the Carl Albert State College softball and baseball teams has now been set.
The Lady Vikings, who played Thursday afternoon on the road against Fort Scott, Kan., will make up Wednesday's road doubleheader against Coffeyville, Kan., at 1 this afternoon.
Since the Lady Vikings are playing this afternoon, they have pushed Saturday afternoon's home twinbill against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M to a 2 p.m. Sunday doubleheader.
The Vikings will play in a pair of nine-inning games beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday at Seminole State College along with Indian Hills.

Thursday action on diamonds canceled

Once again, Mother Nature was the big winner on the baseball and softball diamonds on Thursday, canceling all action.
Thursday high school games canceled were Heavener at Whitesboro, Gans at Panama and Cameron and Tushka at Wilburton.
The Heavener-Whitesboro game will be made up as part of a three-way beginning at 3:30 this afternoon in Heavener with Clayton. Heavener and Clayton will play the first game, followed by a battle of Bulldogs between Whitesboro and Clayton, then Whitesboro and Heavener in the finale.

Attending Teresa Thompson Benefit Dinner

We went to the Teresa Thompson Benefit Dinner and Pie Auction Sunday afternoon at the Poteau Upper Elementary School cafeteria. The top items that were up for auction were Elaine Jensen's fried pies, Pete Crandell's chocolate-covered strawberries and Linda Newman's best-ever chocolate-chip cookies.
My son, Jacques, had $120 stashed away from his birthday and Christmas. He got his bid card, No. 27, and he waited for Linda's cookies to come on the auction block.

Rebounding key to Lady Vikings' Region II Tournament quarterfinal victory over Lady Mavericks; CASC women play archrival Eastern in this afternoon's semifinals with hopes of making Saturday afternoon's finals

SHAWNEE — Outrebounding the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks 49-39 and going 24-of-30 from the free-throw line for 80 percent were both huge for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 76-62 win in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Women's Region II Tournament on Wednesday night at St. Gregory's University.

Poteau-Greenwood girls soccer game off; PHS teams entertain McAlester tonight

Tuesday's Poteau Lady Pirates soccer game against Greenwood, Ark., tried to be made up Thursday night, but it could not be. It, along with the Poteau-Greenwood boys game, has yet to be rescheduled.
The Poteau teams will entertain McAlester at 5 p.m. (girls) and 7 p.m. (boys) Friday at Costner Stadium.

Talihina boys regional consolation champions; faced Pocola Indians on Thursday afternoon; Season ends in consolation finals for Talihina girls

The Talihina Golden Tigers had to make this week's Class 2A Area Tournament the hard way.
Cord Fitzgerald's buzzer-beating 3-point basket gave the Golden Tigers their only lead in the Class 2A Regional Tournament consolation finals as they beat the Hartshorne Miners 46-45 Saturday afternoon in Quinton. The win put them into the area tournament's consolation quarterfinals where they met county rival Pocola on Thursday afternoon at the Muskogee Civic Center, with the winner needing to win Friday afternoon and Saturday night to make state.
