Poteau soccer teams sweep McAlester in openers

The 2014 seasons got underway in fine fashion for the Poteau High School soccer teams Friday night at Costner Stadium with a sweep of McAlester. The Lady Pirates opened things with a 9-3 victory, then the Pirates began defense of their Class 4A state title with a 5-1 win.
The Poteau teams will play today at Wagoner, with the girls' game at 5 p.m. and the boys at 7 p.m.

The Carl Albert State College softball team went 1-3 in their four-game stretch over the weekend. The Lady Vikings were swept at home Sunday afternoon by Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, falling 4-3 and 7-2.
On Friday, the Lady Vikings split their road doubleheader in Coffeyville, Kan., run ruling the hosts in the opener 8-0 in five innings before losing 7-6 in the nightcap.
After entertaining archrival Eastern Oklahoma State College on Monday afternoon, the Lady Vikings will be in a road doubleheader against Connors State College beginning at 2 this afternoon in Warner.

Red Oak girls lose state finals to Okarche Lady Warriors; Lady Eagles beat Lomega in OT in state semifinals

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Red Oak Lady Eagles brought home a ball from the Class B State Tournament, but it wasn't the one they had wanted.
The Lady Eagles fell 66-41 to the Okarche Lady Warriors in the Saturday's finals after beating the Lomega Raiderettes 65-56 in overtime in Friday's state semifinals.

Spiro stabbing update

One woman was taken to a Fort Smith hospital Friday [March 7] night after being stabbed in the neck by her boyfriend, according to Spiro Chief of Police Darrel Barham.
Barham said her boyfriend fled the area and officers are seeking a warrant for his arrest.
As of today [March 11], charges had not yet been filed in connection with the stabbing.

KTC unveils newest edition

Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau is hosting a drop-in open house till 2 p.m. today [March 11]. During the open house the public can tour the new Emergency Medical Training Programs EMS building and Disaster Response and EMS Training Simulator.

Weekend High School Baseball Roundup

The Poteau Pirates got their 2014 season off and running with a pair of run-rule wins Saturday afternoon at a rainy, chilly Town Creek Park. Poteau got a 15-2 four-inning victory over the Wister Wildcats to end the three-way and got it started with an 11-0 five-inning win over the Checotah Wildcats.
In the middle game, in a battle of Wildcats, Checotah run ruled Wister 14-1 in five innings.
Heaverner 8, Whitesboro 0; Heavener 9, Clayton 3; Clayton 15, Whitesboro 4: Friday in Heavener, the Wolves opened their season with a pair of wins, while the Bulldogs went winless on the day.

Weekend High School Softball Roundup

CLAYTON — The Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs made it a happy weekend with a 12-0, four-inning run-rule victory over the Clayton Lady Bulldogs.
Whitesboro had a three-run second inning, a seven-run third inning and a two-run fourth inning to get the win.
Heavener 14, Roland 1: Friday at Roland, the Lady Wolves got their season off and running in a big way. Heavener jumped out to a 13-0 lead after an inning.

Poteau Invitational track meet this afternoon

March 11, 2014

The first high school track meet of the season will take place today with the Poteau Invitational, which will begin at 1 p.m. at Costner Stadium.
Besides host Poteau's teams, Arkoma, Heavener, Howe and Spiro are expected to be at the meet.

Versa Wright, 89, of Muse died Friday, March 7, 2014, at her home.
Services were held Monday, March 10, at Whitesboro Baptist Church. Burial was in Muse Cemetery under the direction of Burkhart Funeral Service, Talihina.

Jack L. Williams, 84, of Cameron died Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Pocola.
Private services are planned.
Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau, is handling arrangements.
