The Poteau Pirates soccer team was planning on beginning the defense of its 2013 Class 4A state championship, but they will have to wait until another day. The Lady Pirates are in the same boat.
Today's season openers at home against Greenwood, Ark., have been canceled due inclement weather.
The girl's game has been rescheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, but Poteau girls coach Jim Erwin said the contest could be moved to Greenwood. A decision may not come until Wednesday, since both schools were out today due to inclement weather.
Sunday afternoon's sleeting show played havoc with Monday's high school baseball and slow-pitch softball games.
Monday baseball games canceled were Fort Gibson at Poteau, Hartshorne at Cameron, Arkoma at Panama and Pocola at Oktaha.
Monday softball games canceled were Bokoshe and Porum at Wister, Warner at Panama, Heavener and Broken Bow at Smithville and Spiro at Keota.
As of now, all of these games will try to be rescheduled except two softball match-ups â€” Warner at Panama and Heavener and Broken Bow at Smithville.
SAND SPRINGS â€” The Leflore Savages basketball team needed only one win this past weekend to make the Class B State Tournament. Unfortunately for the locals, it didn't happen.
The Savages saw the Cave Springs Hornets avenge the regional finals loss to Leflore with a 68-64 overtime victory over the Savages in Saturday night's Class B Area Tournament consolation finals.
The Savages had a shot at making state on Friday night, but came up short in a 57-52 loss to the Red Oak Eagles in the area finals.
Three people died in a house fire on Lennox Road near Whitesboro Monday afternoon.
The LeFlore County Sheriff's Department said names are not being released pending identification.
The Carl Albert State College Poteau and Sallisaw campuses, which planned to open at 11 a.m. today [March 4] will remain closed.
All other schools in LeFlore County also are closed.
The LeFlore County Courthouse is open.
Daniel Raymond Foster, 58, of Spiro died Saturday, March 1, 2014. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Victory Worship Center under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Alvin D. Brown, 73, of Heavener died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 in Fort Smith, Ark. Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 3, at Dowden Roberts Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Sandra Louise Berry, 39, of Spiro died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Trinity Baptist Church under the direction of Mallory-Martin Funeral Home.
Brenda E. Griffith, 54, of Poteau died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, in Poteau. Brenda was born June 15, 1959 in Bakersfield, Calif., to Henry and Carmel (Dial) Griffith. She was a painter. Brenda was preceded in death by her mother; sister, Patsy High; and brother, Newt Henry Griffith.
William David Burgess III of Spiro was born Nov. 10, 2006, in Poteau to William David and Bobbie Jo (Plummer) Burgess II and died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, in Oklahoma City at the age of 7.
