Leflore, Heavener baseball teams suffer losses in Red Oak Festival

RED OAK — The Leflore Savages and the Heavener Wolves came up on the short end of their games Friday in the Red Oak Festival.
The Savages lost 14-6 to Tushka, while the Wolves suffered their first loss of the season as they lost a slugfest contest 18-16 to Washington.

Action back in full swing now that spring break ended; LeFlore County Baseball Tournament begins Monday at Heavener, Town Creek Park

I hope you all enjoyed your spring break. I got to spend mine by working on both Saturday's 2014 Spring Sports Guide and our Progress special sections that will come out this upcoming Saturday.
I hope you all will like both special sections, especially the Guide — since I'm a little bit biased when it comes to sports, you know.
Tournament Week
It is a tournament week for both baseball and softball. The Cameron and Panama teams will be in the Crowder Tournament, while Spiro's boys will be in the Bixby Tournament.

Poteau golf trio make Top 10 in weekend Texas tournament; Lady Pirates third, boys sixth in Cleburne Spring Classic

GLEN ROSE, Texas — Three Poteau High School golfers made the top five in their respective division in this past weekend's Cleburne Spring Classic, which ended its two-day event Saturday at Squaw Valley Golf Course.
Poteau's Hannah Ward, the two-time defending Class 4A state champion and future Arkansas-Little Rock Lady Trojan, finished second in the event with a 152 after she shot a 75 in Saturday's final round.
Poteau's Cody Shore was third-place medalist and teammate Connor Wheat was eighth in the boys division. Shore, who shot a 69 on Saturday, finished the two-day event with a 143.

CASC baseball team suffers weekend losses to Connors State, Rose State; Vikings face archrival Eastern Tuesday night in Wilburton

It was a rough weekend of baseball for the Carl Albert State College Vikings as they lost three one-run games.
After being swept by identical scores of 5-4 Saturday afternoon against Rose State College in Midwest City, the Vikings lost a 4-3 nine-inning contest to NJCAA Division I's top-ranked Connors State College Cowboys on Sunday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings will return to action Tuesday night in a single, nine-inning game against archrival Eastern Oklahoma State College at 6 p.m. in Wilburton.

Cameron boys split four games in own spring break festival

CAMERON — The Cameron Yellowjackets baseball team went 2-2 in last week's Cameron Spring Break Festival, getting wins to open and end the three-day event.
The Yellowjackets ended the event with an 8-6 win over Oktaha on Friday after opening on Wednesday night with a 6-5 victory over Charleston, Ark.
The ’Jackets suffered losses on Thursday to Seminole (12-1) and Stilwell (10-1).

Nina B. Smith, 86, of Poteau died Saturday, March 22, 2014, in Poteau. Nina was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Pine Valley to Linn and Bertha (Davis) Adkins. She was a waitress. Nina was a resident of Poteau for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Smith; daughter, Judy Kay Brooks; sisters, Helen Gower and Addie Green.
