Volunteers needed at National Cemetary to help with wreaths today

Last night's storm has blown down almost all the wreaths in every section of the Fort Smith National Cemetery that were laid on the headstones during Saturday’s Christmas Honors’ event. Volunteers are needed to stop by today to help reset the wreaths.

Poteau runner signs with Oklahoma City University

No one ever knows what tomorrow will bring, but Poteau High School cross country/track runner Sheridan Hoyer got very nice surprise one morning when Oklahoma City University wanted her services. The Poteau senior made official when she signed with OCU in a signing ceremony Friday afternoon inside the high school.
“I’m extremely excited,” Hoyer said. “I thought I’d never be running for a college team. To have this opportunity is just incredible. I’m looking forward to it.”

Swinford wins fourth Pigskin Picks Contest

Robert Swinford won his fourth Poteau Daily News Pigskin Picks Contest of the season last week. He went 6-4, but won the tie-breaker as he was closest to the Talihina-Cashion Class A state semifinal contest last weekend — which was won by Cashion 48-32. Swinford won $25 for his victory.
Swinford is in line for the grand prize at the end of this football season's contest, which will run until Super Bowl XLIX in February.

Poteau wrestlers dominate Van Buren in season opener; Pirates have home-opening dual Monday night against Quinton

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The 2014-15 high school wrestling season could not have started off any better for the Poteau Pirates as they routed the Van Buren Pointers 64-18 with the youngest squad in school history that featured six freshmen in the starting line-up.
The Pirates won 11 of the 14 matches.
The Pirates will have their home opener at 7 p.m. Monday against the Quinton Savages at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The junior high team, which spent this weekend at the Cleveland Tournament, will have its dual with the Savages at 6 p.m.

Whitesboro boys in semifinals at First National Bank Classic; Lady Bulldogs split first two games, in consolation championship today

McALESTER — The Whitesboro Bulldogs have a chance at bringing home a tournament championship trophy for the second straight weekend.
The ‘Dogs edged the Coalgate Wildcats 47-45 in Thursday’s opening-round game of the inaugural First National Bank Classic at the Southeast Expo Center.
The Bulldogs played Calera in Friday night’s championship semifinals with the winner playing for the championship at 8 tonight. The loser will play for third place at 5 this afternoon.

Leflore teams sweep home games from Indianola on Thursday night

LEFLORE — The week ended on a high note for the Leflore High School basketball teams Thursday night on Nadine Carpenter Court as they swept a pair of games from Indianola. The Lady Savages routed the Lady Warriors 59-19, while the Savages followed suit with an 80-34 romp.

Spiro teams advance to championship semifinals of Wilburton Tournament; Lady Pirates reach consolation finals, but Pirates go 0-2 in weekend event

The Spiro High School basketball teams will try to begin their first weekend of basketball season with championships Saturday night.
Both Spiro teams won their tournament openers, and in big ways. The Lady Bulldogs handled the Hartshorne Lady Miners 50-20, while the ’Dogs were too much for the Stigler Panthers as they prevailed 66-43.

Howe, Arkoma girls reach Green Valley Conference Tournament finals

CAMERON — The top two seeds, the Howe Lady Lions and the Arkoma Lady Mustangs, reached Saturday night’s title game of the third annual Green Valley Conference Tournament with Thursday night semifinal victories at the Cameron Gym.
The Lady Lions clawed the Wister Lady Wildcats 75-30, while the Lady Mustangs stampeded past the Panama Lady Razorbacks 75-49. Howe and Arkoma will play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for the title, while Wister and Panama will battle for third place at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
