Sallisaw outlasts Poteau girls in eight innings Friday afternoon

SALLISAW — A four-run eighth inning doomed the Poteau Lady Pirates as they lost 7-4 to the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds.
The Lady Pirates (6-16) broke a 3-all tie in the top of the eighth inning on Bayli Soriano's RBI single, scoring Sunnie McConnell, to give Poteau a 4-3 lead.

Spiro girls win Prague Tournament; Lady Bulldogs beat host Lady Red Devils twice to claim title

PRAGUE — The Spiro Lady Bulldogs softball team bounced back from Thursday's rough road loss to county rival Poteau by ending the week with a championship.
The Lady Bulldogs won the Prague Tournament on Saturday, beating the host Lady Red Devils 11-4 in the second title game after taking the first championship game 6-1 over Prague.
After losing Friday to Okemah 4-3, the Lady Bulldogs won two straight games, 8-2 over Coalgate and 9-6 over Davenport, to reach the title round.

Leflore boys' late rally falls short against Kiowa

KIOWA — The Leflore Savages baseball team had a rally fall short in losing 6-5 to the Kiowa Cowboys on Aug. 26.
The Cowboys broke a 3-all tie with a three-run fifth inning, but the Savages did not go down without a fight.
Leflore scored twice in the seventh inning and had the game-tying run at third base, but he was stranded there at the end of the game.
Editor's note: Tuesday's Howe-Cameron game and Red Oak-Wister game were rained out, but the Wildcats played at Rattan to make up for Tuesday's originally scheduled game.

Bessie Smith, 85, of Panama died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, in Poteau,
Bessie was born Aug. 5, 1929, in Poteau to Roosevelt and Chloe (Brown) Oliver.
Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Joe Fitzer; her second husband, Bill Smith; an infant son, Bobby Fitzer; three brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by three daughters, Brenda Cook and husband Charles, Joy Moore and husband Don, Chloe House and husband Patrick; stepson, Joe M. Daniel and wife Donnell; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Hazel Opal Hetherington, 99, of Poteau, formerly of Panama died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, in Sallisaw.

Three-car accident blocks part of Broadway

A three-car crash at about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday blocked the outside northbound lane of Broadway in Poteau for about 40 minutes until police completed an investigation of the accident.

Spiro offense moves ball against Pocola, but Indians get defensive takeaways in Friday night’s scrimmage

When two county football teams, the Pocola Indians and the Spiro Bulldogs, met in Friday night’s scrimmage at Spiro’s McClain Stadium, each team’s strength came to the forefront.
Offensively, the Bulldogs will be counting upon senior quarterback McKinley Whitfield to lead the way, and he did just that.
In the final part of the scrimmage where it was a simulated half of football, Whitfield had a 38-yard touchdown pass to D.T. Neal, to go with two long pass plays to Chad Tye — covering 20 and 40 yards.

Heavener, Panama each score in Friday’s scrimmage

Panama coach Brandon Ellis was wanting one main objective from Friday night’s home scrimmage against the Heavener Wolves at George Ollie Stadium.
“We just want to stay healthy and see how our younger players react to different color jerseys,” he said.
Even though the Razorbacks have made the playoffs for the past two years, their numbers have dwindled to 22 players.
The Wolves, on the other hand, saw an increase in their numbers as they welcomed home Sam Hembree, who is beginning his first year as Heavener’s coach.

High School Football Scrimmage Roundup

ARKOMA — Arkoma football coach Mark Weatherton was wanting to see improvement in two areas in Friday night’s home scrimmage against the Webbers Falls Warriors — his linemen’s play and his team’s running game. He got both.
The Mustangs’ only score was a 12-yard run by Dakotah Roam to cap a 20-play, 80-yard drive.
