Tryouts for CASC athletics slated

April 15, 2014

Tryouts for Carl Albert State College’s athletic teams are scheduled.
Men’s basketball tryouts will take place today [April 15] at 1:30 p.m.
Women’s basketball is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Mick Thompson Fitness Center on the Poteau campus.
Men’s baseball is set for Tuesday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Carl Albert State College Baseball Field.
Women’s softball tryouts will be Tuesday, May 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the Carl Albert State College Softball Field.

Poteau soccer teams split with Fort Gibson Tigers; Lady Pirates, Pirates welcome county rival Heavener to town tonight for Senior Night

FORT GIBSON — The Poteau High School soccer teams split their road games against host Fort Gibson on Friday night. The Pirates prevailed 3-1 over the Tigers in a battle of ranked teams, while the Lady Tigers blanked the Lady Pirates 8-0.
The Poteau teams will have Senior Night games tonight with county rival Heavener at Costner Stadium. The girls' game will be at 5 p.m., with playoff ramifications on the line for both teams. The boys' contest will begin at 7 p.m., with the district lead at stake.

CASC baseball team splits Saturday's home games with NOC-Tonkawa; Vikings entertain Coffeyville, Kan., this afternoon

The Carl Albert State College Vikings baseball team split its home doubleheader with Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Saturday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings took the nightcap 4-2 after losing 3-2 in the opener.
The Vikings will return to action at 1:30 this afternoon in a home doubleheader against Coffeyville, Kan., at Ival Goodman Field.

Carl Albert softball team homers way to win in opener over Eastern before losing nightcap in extras; Lady Vikings, whose Monday doubleheader at NOC-Enid has been moved to Wednesday, will entertain Seminole State this afternoon

WILBURTON — The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings softball team literally homered its way to a Game 1 4-0 victory over the archrival Eastern Oklahoma State College Lady Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon, hitting three round-trippers to produce all four runs.
Unfortunately for the Lady Vikings, they suffered a 3-2, eight-inning loss to the Lady Mountaineers in the nightcap.
The Lady Vikings, whose Monday road doubleheader against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid moved to 2 p.m. Wednesday due to weather, will entertain Seminole State College for a 2 p.m. twinbill this afternoon.

Poteau boys finish third at Coal Mining Classic; Heavener boys fall to Oktaha in consolation semifinals

HARTSHORNE — The Poteau Pirates baseball team ended the weekend on a high note with a 13-0 rout of the Eufaula Ironheads to win third place in the 2014 Coal Mining Classic.
The Pirates lost in Friday night's semifinals 9-0 to Silo.
The Heavener Wolves were eliminated from the tournament on Friday, losing 5-3 to Oktaha in the consolation semifinals.

Wister boys fall to Red Oak in title game of own tournament

WISTER — The good news for the Wister baseball program on Saturday was that two pieces of hardware came home from the 2014 Wister Invitational Baseball Tournament. Unfortuntely, neither plaque was the championship one.
The Wildcats fell 9-0 to Red Oak in Saturday's title game after handling Panama 13-1 in Friday night's championship semifinals. The Eagles blanked Leflore 7-0 in Friday's other championship semifinal.

Spiro boys outlast Vian to win Tiger Shootout; Pocola third behind senior pitcher's no-hitter

SALLISAW — The Spiro Bulldogs celebrated a tournament title for the second straight weekend. After winning the 2014 LeFlore County Tournament on April 5 at Cameron, the Bulldogs won the Tiger Shootout by outlasting the Vian Wolverines 11-10 in Saturday's title game.
The ’Dogs reached the title game with a 15-2 rout of Westville in Friday's championship semifinals.

RATTAN — The Cameron Yellowjackets split their games in Friday's three-way, beating the Hugo Buffaloes 5-4 but losing 8-2 to the host Rattan Rams.
Keota 15, Arkoma 0: In Keota, the Mustangs were the victims of a perfect game.
The Lions, leading 2-0 after an inning, scored seven unearned runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead. A six-run third inning put the game into run-rule status.
Monday Games Rained Out
Several Monday games were canceled due to wet fields from Sunday's rains.

John Calvin Greer

John Calvin Greer died Friday, April 11, 2014, in Bolivar, Mo. He was born June 13, 1922, in Brawley, Ark., to Reginald and Iva (Oliver) Greer.
He grew up in Poteau and is in the Poteau High School Hall of Fame. John served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1946 in the South Pacific. He went to Southeastern State College in Durant on a track scholarship and graduated there. John taught Science in Oklahoma and Kansas and retired from teaching in 1985. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Leavenworth, Kan.

Jewel Roop, 87, of Heavener died Saturday, April 12, 2014.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at Dowden-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
