Hodgen girls, Monroe boys reach ORES State Tournament semifinals; Hodgen boys, Fanshawe, Monroe girls suffer opening-round tournament losses

SHAWNEE — Two LeFlore County junior high teams, the Hodgen Lady Bulldogs and the Monroe Eagles, made it to Friday night's semifinals of the 2013 Organization of Rural Elementary Schools State Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Moffett 31-29 Thursday at St. Gregory's University to advance to Friday night's Division II semifinals against El Reno Darlington with the winner playing for the state title at 12:40 p.m. at St. Gregory's University.

Talihina teams reach tonight's regional finals

TALIHINA — It was a happy Thursday night of hoops for the Talihina High School teams on their own floor — Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
The Golden Tigers outlasted the Wewoka Tigers 53-51 in overtime in Thursday night's Class 2A Regional Tournament semifinals, while the Lady Golden Tigers defeated the Savanna Lady Bulldogs 52-40.

CASC basketball teams in action today, Monday night

The Carl Albert State College basketball teams will have two games over the next three days. The Vikings (3-21 overall, 1-14 in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play) and the Lady Vikings (9-15, 5-10) will make up Wednesday's snowed-out road games at Seminole State College this afternoon. The women's game at 2 p.m. and the men's contest at 8 p.m.

Poteau girls lose to Fort Gibson, but still alive in Class 4A regional; Pirates' season comes to an end with loss to Inola

FORT GIBSON — The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered their first playoff loss of the season Thursday night, falling 61-47 to the host Fort Gibson Lady Tigers in the Class 4A Regional Tournament.
The Lady Pirates (17-8) played Hilldale on Friday night in the consolation semifinals of the regional tournament, with the winner playing for the consolation championship at 1:30 this afternoon for the right to advance to next week's Class 4A Area Tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.

Spiro boys rally late to down Antlers Bearcats; Bulldogs playing Saturday night for regional title

WILBURTON — All that matters is who leads at the end of the game. Just ask the Spiro Bulldogs.
After trailing for the first 30 minutes of action in Thursday night’s Class 3A Regional Tournament game against the Antlers Bearcats, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the final two minutes of regulation to pull out a 56-53 victory.
The ’Dogs (18-7) will play the Hugo Buffaloes at 8 p.m. Saturday in Antlers for the regional title, but both teams will advance to next week’s Class 3A Area Tournament at Byng High School’s Bill Kohler Fieldhouse.

Heavener girls beat Wyandotte to stave off playoff elimination

MUSKOGEE — The Heavener Lady Wolves did not let Thursday’s cancelation of the Class 3A Regional Tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center bother them when they finally got to resume postseason play Friday afternoon.
The Lady Wolves stayed alive in the playoffs with a 52-42 win over the Wyandotte Lady Bears to reach this afternoon’s consolation semifinals. Heavener will face the loser of Friday night’s Verdigris-Vian game at 1:30 this afternoon, with the winner playing for the consolation championship — and a trip to next week’s Class 3A Area Tournament at Fort Gibson — at 1:30 p.m. Monday.

August Dean Phillips Sr., 81, of Heavener died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Rock Island.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Dowden Funeral Home Chapel in Heavener. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jerry Don Driver

Jerry Don Driver, 66, of Poteau died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Poteau. Jerry was born Aug. 5, 1946, in Hackett, Ark., to Albert and Ida (Higginbotham) Driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Driver; and one sister.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherry and Patrick Hamilton of Arkoma; son, Bobby and Heather Driver of Poteau; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Gene Driver of Van Buren, Ark., Jim Driver of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.

Shirley Beam, 71, of Bokoshe died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, in Bokoshe. Shirley was born Jan. 10, 1942, in Silverton, Ore., to Gerald and Helen (Hale) Wright. She was retired from Oklahomer Smith Furniture. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles David Beam, and granddaughter, Telisha Beam.

Sherman Phillip Floyd

Sherman Phillip Floyd, 88, of Poteau died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, in Poteau.
Sherman was born March 9, 1924, in Tahona to King Philip and Bessie B. (Morrison) Floyd. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a retired teacher. Sherman was a member of the First Baptist Church in Poteau. He was preceded in death by his parents, K.P. and Bessie; daughter, Toni Thompson; two sisters, Earlene Sallis of Oklahoma City and Bea Blankenship of Spiro; brother, Ray Floyd. Sherman started coaching in 1949 and was Poteau High School principal from 1972 mto 1986 when he retired.
