Panama goes for upset of No. 3 Vian tonight

November 7, 2013

The Panama Razorbacks football team went 0-17 from the start of the 2010 season to its Week 8 victory over archrival Pocola in 2011. Now, the Hogs have a shot a piece of the District 2A-6 crown.
The Razorbacks (7-2 overall, 4-1 in district play) will travel to meet Class 2A's third-ranked Vian Wolverines (9-0, 5-0) at 7:30 tonight.
“The kids are excited,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “They're on a four-game winning streak. They've got a lot of confidence. They're playing better ball right now. We're completely healthy. They're excited about this week.”

Time to get the bow out again

November 7, 2013

Primitive arms (muzzle loader) season has come and gone, and I did not get to fire a shot from my smoke pole. I did find some good buck signs, so I plan to take my bow out to those areas and try to stick one.
I have to admit that archery is my favorite kind of hunting, and I am excited to get back in the stand with my Mathews. This coming weekend is usually one of the best times to encounter a buck chasing does. If you have the patience to sit all day… these next two weeks will be the time to do it.

Senior lineman enjoying season, making playoffs

November 6, 2013

There may be no happier camper among the Poteau Pirate football team than senior lineman Jace Akins, who is recovering from an injury suffered a couple of weeks ago.
For starters, the Pirates have eight wins, going for No. 9 Thursday night in a road game against Tulsa Rogers to end the regular season. Plus, the Pirates are going to be a playoff team, regardless of the outcome of Thursday night's game.

Panthers, Jolly Rogers win Poteau Bandit League Bowls

November 6, 2013

The Poteau Bandit Football League had its Bandit Bowls on Saturday. In the third-fourth grade championship, the Panthers had a complete reversal of fortune from last year, which was loaded with third-grade players who did not win a single game. This year the Panthers went 7-0 as they were top heavy with second-year players.
The Panthers held off the Cowboys 19-12 to win the third-fourth grade championship.

Poteau Bandit League sixth-grade, third-grade teams reach title games; season ends for fourth-graders in semifinal loss to VB Green

November 6, 2013

A song by Meatloaf is entitled, “Two Out of Three Ain't Bad.” That song title could describe the Poteau Bandit Traveling League's success in the semifinals of the postseason on Saturday.
The sixth-graders blanked Van Buren (Ark.) Green 40-0 at Costner Stadium, while the third-graders posted a 34-14 win over Van Buren Green just before the sixth-graders victory.
The only blemish on the day happened in Van Buren, where the fourth-graders suffered a season-ending 30-12 loss in the semifinals against Van Buren Green.

Nadine has to be proud

November 5, 2013

Friday night, the Leflore High School basketball teams swept their first games played on Nadine Carpenter Court, getting wins over Indianola.
The weekend before, the legendary coach was honored by having her the court christened Nadine Carpenter Court during the alumni basketball games. Then, the Lady Savages and Savages posted wins on the first-ever true high school basketball games played on the “new” court. Way to go, Lady Savages and Savages, and congratulations Nadine. I figure it had to be a neat night — maybe not the fanfare of the actual court christening, but close.
