Can you believe that the high school baseball and slow-pitch softball seasons will begin today? It will.
Listed at the end of this column will be the list of games today through Monday for both sports.
For those new to the area, this column appears on Tuesdays, beginning next week. This column talks about the ins and the outs, the ups and the downs and what's upcoming on the diamond for our county baseball and slow-pitch softball teams.
Spring Questionnaires Needed for 2012 Spring Sports Guide
The Poteau High School soccer teams played their final scrimmages of the season Tuesday at Costner Stadium against Greenwood, Ark.
Both the boys and girls games were advanced by two hours in hopes of beating a strong line of thundershowers that was crossing the state of Oklahoma with Poteau in its sights.
The visiting Lady Bulldogs easily disposed of the Lady Pirates by the score of 4-1, with Poteau's only goal being an own goal which was accidentally scored by Greenwood player.
But a late strike by the Pirates enabled them to win 3-2 over the ’Dogs.
NEOSHO, Mo. — The week did not start off the way the Carl Albert State College softball team would have liked.
The Lady Vikings suffered a doubleheader loss at the hands of Crowder College by scores of 4-3 and 12-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

Casey Edward Branscum, 21, of Fanshawe died Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, in McAlester.
Casey was born May 24, 1990 in Poteau to Robert Carl and Tina Rachell (Ingle) Branscum. He was a roughneck. Casey was a member of the Fanshawe Fire Department, and Fanshawe Free Will Baptist Church. He loved to hunt, fish, play baseball and was known to be ornery at times. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bailey and Carolyn Branscum.Â

Trial for Aaron Hinson began Tuesday morning at 9 A.m. Seven woman and five men were chosen to decide Hinson's fate. The trial began with jury members listening closely to what their responsibilities and requirements are as a juror. After instructions were given opening statements were presented by both Margaret Nicholson, Assistant District Attorney prosecuting in the case and Peter Ashor, defense attorney for Hinson. Nicholson began telling the jurors what evidence she would be presenting and how she is convinced that Hinson was guilty of murdering his girlfriends three-month-old son.
LeFlore County now has six high school basketball teams still alive in the playoffs — Poteau's girls (Class 4A), Spiro's teams (Class 3A), Howe's girls (Class 2A), Talihina's girls (Class 2A) and Wister's boys (Class 2A).
As I stated in the headline of today's column, five of these schools have a shot at making next week's state tournaments.
You wonder why not all six? That is because if the Lady Lions and the Lady Golden Tigers win their playoff games on Thurdsay, they will meet each other Friday afternoon — and one will knock the other out of the postseason.
