Duck Martin PIT Camp set Friday, Saturday in Wister; many campers wanted for either, both days

WISTER — The 2013 Duck Martin Performance Improvement Training (PIT) Camp will take place Friday and Saturday at the Wister High School baseball field. Camp times will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration at 7:30 a.m. daily at the site, and campers can attend both days or just one day of the camp.
However, for the first time, numbers are low in the early stages of registration, which concerns Rodney Nobles, who is one of the camp directors.

Askins to speak at First Friday lunch

Poteau Chamber of Commerce will welcome Jari Askins as its keynote speaker Friday.
Kiamichi Technology Center will host the lunch in the Health Building South Campus Room 517/518. Meal cost is $8. For reservations call (918) 647-9178 or e-mail adminpoteauchamber@windstream.net.
Askins will speak about Oklahoma’s Peggy and Charles Stephenson Cancer Center on the Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Campus in Oklahoma City. 

Softball fundraiser for World Series trip

The Pirates softball team will have a hamburger meal fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. July 18 in front of Costner Stadium in the northeast corner of the parking lot by the signal light at Stadium Drive. Hamburger/cheeseburger baskets cost $6, and orders may be placed by calling (918) 647-1694. Orders can be delivered if need be. All proceeds will help fund the team's trip to the World Series, which will be July 19-21 in Shawnee.

Hosts sought for exchange student program

Barbara Jane Waring

Barbara Jane Waring died July 1, 2013. She was born near Mena, Ark., to Owen and Nellie Norris on Jan. 18, 1937.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Waring, and her brother, Dennis Norris. She live in Oklahoma City, Moore and Edmond area until 2008, then moved to Georgia to be near her daughter.

School board presented plan for new high school

Preliminary plans for a new high school and a $21.575 million bond issue to pay for it were presented at Monday's meeting of the Poteau Board of Education.
Superintendent Don Sjoberg said the plans are "about 80 percent complete," and he plans to have a firm proposal to present for the board's approval in August.
Poteau architect Michael Riley showed drawings of the proposed structure, saying the plans would accommodate future expansion and were designed for low and easy maintenance.

Fout named assistant vice president

Arvest Bank is pleased to announce the promotion of Sherry Fout to assistant vice president. Fout has been with Arvest for more than 12 years and serves as consumer loan officer at the Poteau branch. She recently received the Sales and Service Award for top consumer loan officer of the Fort Smith region for 2012. Sherry also serves on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of LeFlore County, is involved with the Fort Smith Home Show and the Fort Smith Blues Society Music Festival.

Police fatally shoot Poteau man at Pa. home

SEWICKLEY, Pa. (AP) — An Oklahoma man was fatally shot by police responding to a burglar alarm at a home in an upscale Pittsburgh suburb. The man had periodically stayed at the home before a court ordered him to stay away after he allegedly threatened the woman who lived there.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identified the dead man as Robert Brooks, 27, of Poteau, Okla. An autopsy scheduled Tuesday was expected to confirm that he died from being shot when Sewickley police answered the alarm Monday about 9:30 p.m.

Police say driver crossed center line; caused 3-car accident

The cause of a three-car accident in Poteau on July 3, has been released by the Poteau Police Department.
According to the accident report, Corey D. Cooper, 25, of Cameron, crossed the center line on north Broadway, striking another vehicle head-on. Cooper, who was traveling south on Broadway in a 2001 Black Ford pickup near the EZ Mart crashed into a 1995 Green GMC pickup driven by Gregory G. Allison, 44, of Poteau, according to the report.
