For the 17 LeFlore County high school basketball teams remaining in the postseason parade, their playoffs resume today and tonight in regional and area tournaments.
In the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Roland, the Poteau Pirates will play Checotah at 3 p.m., and must win three games in three days to advance to next week's area tournament at Muskogee. The Poteau-Checotah winner will face the Stilwell-Broken Bow loser at 8 p.m. Friday in Sallisaw, with that victor playing for the consolation championship — and a trip to the Class 4A Area Tournament — at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sallisaw.
Last season, the Class of 2012, who were then juniors, saw its high school basketball season end at the Class 4A Regional Tournament. Now as seniors, they want to make sure that doesn't happen again.
“Hopefully, we can get a win,” said senior forward Marshall Jones, whose Pirates will play Checotah at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Roland. “I don't want (this afternoon's) game to be my last game. I really want to get our of regionals. I'm looking forward to this weekend.”
Last season as a sophomore, Poteau High School wrestler Tyler Tustin became only the second Pirate to win a state title — joining his cousin, Jerry Collins (husband of current Lady Pirate softball coach Misty Collins), as state champions on the mat.
Beginning Friday, Tustin will begin competing at the Class 4A State Tournament at Oklahoma City's State Fair Arena with a chance at repeating.
The Carl Albert State College softball team had its road doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Independence, Kan., canceled, with no make-up date scheduled.
The Lady Vikings will return to action this afternoon as they will make up the home doubleheader with Crowder, Mo., beginning at noon.
Then, Carl Albert will play in this weekend's Murray State College Festival Friday and Saturday at the Johnston County Sports Complex in Tishomingo.
After taking two games from the Coffeyville (Kan.) Junior College Ravens Tuesday afternoon at their place, the Carl Albert State College Vikings did likewise to them Wednesday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field by scores of 4-1 and 3-2.
The Vikings will hit the road to Texas this weekend. The Vikings will have a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday against Tyler, Texas, then a single, nine-inning game against Northeast Texas in Mount Pleasant, Texas, at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Carl Albert State College Vikings baseball team ran its record to 6-0 with a pair of road wins over Coffeyville Junior College Tuesday afternoon by scores of 10-3 and 16-12.
This world lost one of the most inspiring people that has ever walked on the face of the earth this week. My sister, Janice Couch, passed away Sunday after a two-and-a-half-year battle with ovarian cancer. She will be dearly missed by all that knew her.
The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) LeFlore County Longbeard Banquet will be March 8 at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
The NWTF is a national non-profit organization that is the leader in upland wildlife habitat conservation in North America. The organization includes outdoors-minded individuals who care deeply about our natural resources, and the wild places we love to hunt.
