Leflore basketball teams post sweep of Indianola to open season Friday night; Monday night's home games vs. Panola moved there for tonight

LEFLORE — The 2013-14 basketball seasons got underway in fine fashion Friday night for the Leflore High School basketball teams.
Both the Lady Savages and Savages won for the first time on the newly-christened Nadine Carpenter Court as they both defeated Indianola. The Lady Savages held off the Lady Warriors 34-31, while the Savages routed the Warriors 89-44.

Cameron boys begin hoop season with new coach

The 2013-14 Cameron Yellowjackets basketball season will begin at 8 tonight at home against the Howe Lions after the Lady ’Jackets open the season against the Lady Lions at 6:30 p.m.
However, it won't be the only thing new tonight. It will also begin a new era for the ’Jackets as new coach Jeremy Williams will be on the sidelines tonight, replacing Dustin Hall, who is now coaching at Hodgen.

Offensive woes continue for Hogs in loss to Auburn

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When looking at the final statistics from Saturday's Southeastern Conference game between the 11th-ranked Auburn Tigers and the Arkansas Razorbacks at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, the Hogs had more first downs than the Tigers — 25 to 18 — and had about the same amount of total offensive yards — 346 yards to Auburn's 366.
However, it's not about how many yards or first downs you get, but what you do with the football when you possess it. Unfortunately for the Razorbacks, they had too many miscues, which led to a 35-17 victory by the Tigers.

Poteau cross country runner earns All-State status; Lady Pirates place seventh at Class 4A State Meet

EDMOND — Poteau senior cross country runner Deven Bond was hoping to earn All-State status by finishing in the top 10 at Saturday's Class 4A State Meet at Edmond Santa Fe High School. She did.
Bond was eighth with a time of 12:33.91 to become an All-Stater.
As a team, the Lady Pirates were seventh with 187 points, finishing behind state champion Plainview (25 points), Tulsa Metro Christian (127), Sequoyah-Claremore (149), Elgin (153), Oklahoma City Heritage Hall (156) and Vinita (185).

Lady Vikings win OT thriller over Jefferson County

Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside's Bria Caldwell's 19 points and game tying 3-point basket at the end of regulation proved to be the difference in the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings' 73-69 overtime win over Jefferson County, Mo.,  on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the State Fair Classic in Sedalia, Mo.
The next game for the Lady Vikings is the home opener and homecoming at 6 p.m. Thursday against the Bacone College junior varsity at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.

Vikings get swept in Midwest Scouting Service Challenge

With 3:30 left in the second half, the Carl Albert State College Vikings trailed by seven points, and that is when foul trouble with multiple players cost them in their 92-73 loss to ninth-ranked South Plains College in the second and final day of the Midwest Scouting Service Challenge on Sunday morning in Dallas.
Despite outscoring the 16th-ranked Howard, Texas by seven points in the second half, it wasn't enough for the Vikings in their 68-61 season-opening loss on Saturday morning.

Hard to believe the season's almost over; playoffs nearing

By the time this column is read, there will only be one more week remaining in the 2013 high school football season. How time flies when you're having fun, right?
The playoffs will begin in two weeks, and it's going to be a banner one for LeFlore County — at least to start.

SMITHVILLE — The Howe Lions opened their 2013-14 season in fine fashion Friday night with a 70-39 rout of the Smithville Braves.
The Lions had a 15-8 lead after one period, but outscored the Braves by 12 points in the second quarter at 20-8 to take a 35-16 halftime lead.
Red Oak 70, Wister 37: In Wister, the Eagles had an 11-7 lead after one period and slowly stretched it from there. They led 25-17 at halftime and 43-26 entering the final period.

SMITHVILLE — The Howe Lady Lions got their 2013-14 basketball season off to a roaring start as they routed the Smithville Lady Braves 72-31 Friday night.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 23-7 lead after a period and never looked back.
Red Oak 67, Wister 27: In Wister, the Lady Eagles soared out to a 25-9 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
