No teams made it to state this fall on the diamond; Poteau softball coach gets 300th coaching win during LCT

For the first time in my four falls here at sports editor, there is no state tournament on the fast-pitch softball or fall baseball diamonds for LeFlore County. The Poteau Lady Pirates had the last chance, but for the third straight fall they lost in the regional finals to see their season end.
However, the Poteau season was still a very good one, amassing a 28-10 record, the team's fifth straight county title and 11th straight district title. Senior ace RaeLynn Caldwell eclipsed the 300-strikeout plateau this season during last week's Class 4A Regional Tournament.

New football districts announced by OSSAA

Here's the news you all have been waiting for, at least if you're high school football fans.
The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association announced earlier this week the new high school football districts for the 2014 and 2015 seasons.
There's some major changes in some, and not-so-many changes in others.

Checotah Wildcats too much for Heavener Wolves

Despite playing a tough brand of football, the Heavener Wolves were unable to make the plays that counted Friday, losing 48-7 to the Checotah Wildcats at Ogle Field.
"We had some chances but just couldn't punch through," Heavener coach Carl Lee said.

Heavener runners participate at OBU Invitational meet; course ran will be their state course later this month

SHAWNEE — The Heavener High School cross country runners got a taste of what the Class 3A State Meet course will be like as they ran in the Oklahoma Baptist University Invitational on Thursday at the Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
In the girls 3,200-meter run, the only Heavener runner was Gloriann Staines, who was 215th (17:52) out of nearly 300 runners in the race.
In the girls 3,200-meter junior varsity race, Barbara Johnson was 25th (15:05), while Ali Paxton was 89th (17:27).

Leflore High School to honor former coach

LEFLORE — A new gymnasium floor will be dedicated to former coach Nadine Carpenter.
The dedication will take place in conjunction with the second annual Leflore Alumni basketball game at 7 p.m. Oct. 26.
Carpenter was 821-335 in 43 years of coaching and is a member of both the Oklahoma Coaches Association and LeFlore County Coaches Association halls of fame.

Buccaneer Basketball registration has begun. Registration forms can be picked up at Poteau City Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Cost to register is $25 per player and deadline to enter is Oct. 25.
Anyone interested in coaching a team needs to contact Billy Bond at (918) 647-1939.
The first coaches meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Poteau City Hall. The draft will be Oct. 23.

The 2013 Eagle Crest 4-Ball Golf Tournament will be next Saturday and Sunday at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Fort Smith, Ark.

The Arkoma Mustangs bucked off an early scare and rode home with a big 65-28 win in district play against the Midway Chargers in a District C-4 game Friday night at Council Hill.

Panama goes hog wild on homecoming, routs Antlers

PANAMA — It was a happy homecoming for the Panama Razorbacks Friday night at George Ollie Stadium as they handled the Antlers Bearcats 40-22 in a District 2A-6 contest.
