Getting ready for 'Jacquestoberfest 2013'

November 1, 2013

I spent all day last Friday cleaning out the front of my shop for “Jacquestoberfest 2013.” We had a big Halloween party for Jacques and his friends. I made chili cheese dogs and Frito chili pies for all the kids to eat.
Melissa Urichson made a whole bunch of Halloweeen cupcakes as well as cookies and cream popcorn. I know — what? Cookies and cream popcorn? However, I have to say it was awesome.
The party kids played ping pong, air hockey and pool.

Senior Night for Poteau Pirates Friday night against Broken Bow

October 31, 2013

The home finale for the Poteau Pirates will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Costner Stadium against the Broken Bow Savages. That's the regular-season home finale, that is.
“It's going to be a great night for our seniors,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said. “We have a great group we want to honor this week. So, we just need to go out and get a win. Of course, we're talking in terms of this isn't our last home game, it's our last regular-season home game.”

Panama, Pocola renew rivalry Friday night in Pocola

October 31, 2013

There may not be a bigger game than the one that will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at John Carter Field when the visiting Panama Razorbacks renew their rivalry with the homestanding Pocola Indians.
“It's a huge game,” Panama coach Brandon Ellis said. “It doesn't matter what the records are. You can throw all those out the window. We're going to get the best they will offer, and they'll get the best that we'll offer.”

Spiro welcomes Roland Rangers for key 3A-8 game

October 31, 2013

The Spiro Bulldogs football team continues to roll along, now on a seven-game winning streak since losing the season opener to Vian.
The Bulldogs (7-1 overall, 5-0 in District 3A-8) will look to make the winning streak reach eight games as they entertain the Roland Rangers (5-3, 2-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at McClain Stadium.

Black and orange, yea!

October 31, 2013

There are several teams I could never cheer for — Russia, Oklahoma State, the Dallas Cowboys, Spiro and Sallisaw. However, wait for a minute. For the next two weeks, I am going on a crash course on the lyrics for the Black Diamonds' fight song.
For these next two weeks, I am going to be a Black Diamond fan. The only way for the Pirates to finish with the top seed in District 4A-4 is a three-way tie for the top spot in the district with Poteau, Tulsa Cascia Hall and Sallisaw.

More area youths in the spotlight

October 31, 2013

Muzzle loading season is in full swing, and I only have hunted one evening so far. Paula and I went to our friend’s house in Greers Ferry, Ark., for the weekend, so I did not get to hunt. We had a heck of a time four-wheeling in the mountains there, and it was definitely well worth the trip.

October 30, 2013

After seeing their perfect season dashed by the Tulsa Cascia Hall Commandos Oct. 17 at Costner Stadium, the Poteau Pirates knew a big win was needed last week at Muldrow. They got it, winning 42-3 to keep the Pirates' hopes at not just a home playoff game in their grasp, but the No. 1 seed from District 4A-4.
“It was huge,” Pirate senior Connor Wheat said. “We knew we had to get a win, and we got a big one.”

Heavener Wolves in must-win situation Friday night at Idabel

October 30, 2013

Despite being on a three-game losing streak, the Heavener Wolves can still be a part of the Class 3A playoffs. However, to make that happen, the losing streak needs to be snapped.
The Wolves (2-5 overall, 1-4 in District 3A-8) must win out — getting a road win Friday night against Idabel, then winning on Senior Night on Nov. 8 against Eufaula — and some help from LeFlore County's other Class 3A team, Spiro, on Friday night. Then, there will be a 10th game [since Heavener has only nine regular-season games in 2013] on the docket.
