WISTER â€” It looked like it was going to be a low-scoring affair in Tuesday's season opener between Poteau and Wister, but one big inning changed that.
A seven-run fourth inning broke a scoreless tie as the Lady Pirates prevailed in a 12-0, six-inning, run-rule game over the Lady Wildcats.
As strong storms moved across the area Wednesday afternoon more than 1,400 OG&E customers found themselves without electricity.
Poteau saw the brunt of damages along the southern side of town with trees blown down along Morris and Church Streets and a metal building blown onto its top at Dunn Rite Custom Buildings on South Broadway.
According to Michael Davidson, a downburst is possibly to blame for the damages. Wind gusts up to 75 mph were recorded during the storm.
PANAMA â€” The defending Class 2A state champion Panama Lady Razorbacks began defense of their state title in fine fashion Tuesday as they opened the 2012 fast-pitch season with a 10-0 win over the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs.
Heavener 16, Vian 8; Red Oak 12, Heavener 0: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves (1-1) opened the season with a split of their games.
STIGLER â€” The Spiro Lady Bulldogs and the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers opened their 2012 fast-pitch softball season by posting victories in the Stigler Tournament â€” which was originally the Keota Tournament, but the Lady Lions gave it to the Lady Panthers.
The Lady Bulldogs blanked the Arkoma Lady Mustangs 12-0, while the Lady Golden Tigers got past the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets 6-2.
The Pocola Lady Indians were edged 9-8 by the Keota Lady Lions.
CAMERON â€” It took eight innings, but the Cameron Yellowjackets outlasted the Wister Wildcats.
Two unearned runs in the home half of the eighth inning to lift the â€™Jackets to a 8-7 victory over the â€™Cats in Tuesday afternoon's season opener.
Whitesboro 11, Clayton 1; Whitesboro 12, Clayton 0: In Clayton, in a battle of Bulldogs, LeFlore County's canines got the sweep of Pushmataha's â€™Dogs.

As I write this week's column, I am in Cody, Wyo., in a cabin after a great day of rafting down the Shoshone River and five hours of trout fishing in the same river. Cash and Koby had a good day fishing catching about 10 each, and enjoying a relaxing day without much driving.
