Poteau Bandit League teams go 3-1 against Greenwood Blue

GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Poteau Bandit League teams went 3-1 on the day Saturday against Greenwood Blue.
The sixth-grade team won 26-0. The fourth-graders posted a 22-0 shutout, while the third-graders won 26-6.
Greenwood Blue spoiled the chance at the sweep with a 31-0 win over the Poteau fifth-graders.
The Poteau Bandit League teams will return to action next Saturday on the road against Van Buren (Ark.) White. Games will begin at 10 a.m. with the third-grade contest first, then the fourth-grade, fifth-grade and sixth-grade games to follow.

Archery season, baseball playoffs are here

Tuesday was the opening day of deer archery and bear archery season. If you have not bought your bear tag, you are out of luck because you must buy it before archery season starts.
I do not agree with us having to buy a tag by a certain date to kill a bear, but that is the rule so I will not buy one. I may try to hunt a bear in the future, and the wildlife department is giving us more of an opportunity to kill one — but this year is not the year that I will hunt them.

Senior fullback ecstatic with Sallisaw win ... however, Jones knows Pirates need to be ready for Stilwell Indians

The word “ecstatic” was used by Poteau senior fullback Mason Jones to describe Friday night's 34-9 road win over the archrival Sallisaw Black Diamonds at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.
“I was just ecstatic,” Jones said. “I was so pumped. It felt great. I know it was big for me and the other seniors. We had never beaten them. That was a big deal. For the team, it was a good start [in District 4A-4 play] to bigger and better things.”

Poteau girls sweep Roland to win district tournament; Senior pitcher records 20 strikeouts in district-clinching victory

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team showed the Roland Lady Rangers it can win with both offensive outbursts and pitching in Tuesday afternoon's Class 4A District Tournament.
The Lady Pirates used a 12-run first inning to take the opener 14-0 in a three-inning run-rule contest.
However, Poteau used the 20-strikeout performance of senior ace RaeLynn Caldwell and one three-run inning to win the nightcap 3-0.

Heavener girls edge Pocola in regional tune-up contest

HEAVENER — A late rally lifted the Heavener Lady Wolves to a 3-2 victory over the Pocola Lady Indians in a regional-tournament tune-up for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Vike@Nite early registration deadline nears

The Vike @ Nite Black Light Run is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Carl Albert State College in Poteau. 
Preregistration is open until Oct. 10 for an entry fee of $20, and $30 for registration thereafter. CASC students with a current student ID will pay an entry fee of $15. Registration forms can be found at www.carlalbert.edu or by contacting Hali Repass at hrepass@carlalbert.edu. Online registration is available at http://www.eventbrite.com/event/8189634417/es2/?rank=1. On-site registration will be from 3:30-4:30 p.m. the day of the race.

Local team takes second in triathlon

Team members Whitney Kirby, Hali Repass and Beth Phillips brought home medals for their second-place finish in the the Redman Triathalon held recently at Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City. About 30 LeFlore County residents participated in the event.

Poteau Fire Department participates in 'Fill the Boot'

Wear purple in support of domestic abuse victims

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and events are scheduled to help boost public awareness of the important topic.
The month-long emphasis kicks off on Thursday with “Wear Purple Day”. Everyone is encouraged to wear purple to show support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Also Thursday is a press conference and awards ceremony at the State Capitol in Oklahoma City.
