School Board Election results

February 13, 2013

School board seats have been filled and a bond issues settled after Tuesday's election.
Shady Point voters elected Gary Wright over Shila Waddle, 85 to 36.
Fanshawe voters elected Casey Osterhout 13 to 9 over Brandon Baldwin to finish an unexpired term.
Spiro voters chose Raymond Rhodes over Eddie Stout by a vote of 162 to 112.
In Heavener, Lee Morris won 52 to 48 over Todd Vickers.
In Talihina, Brian Holland won the open board seat, beating Rodney Faulkenberry by a vote of 148 to 68.

Poteau football coach wanting to get alumni involved to better program

After the buzz in the Poteau Pirates football program that was in the air in 2012 with the arrival of new coach Greg Werner, the first-year coach wants to capitalize on that.
Werner, whose Pirates went 6-4 last fall, is beginning a fundraising campaign where past players can get involved with their alma mater’s team — and help the program in the process.

Carl Albert baseball team sweeps two from Bacone JV; Tuesday’s road twinbill canceled due to bad weather

MUSKOGEE — The Carl Albert State College baseball team made it 2 for 2 in sweeping doubleheaders to begin the season. The Vikings easily took two from the Bacone College junior varsity by scores of 13-5 and 18-3 — the latter being a five-inning, run-rule game — on Monday afternoon.
Tuesday’s road twinbill at Coffeyville, Kan., was canceled due to bad weather. It has not been rescheduled at present time.

CASC men win OT thriller over Redlands, which beats Lady Vikings

Jaymere Hadden’s 17-foot basket was good as the buzzer sounded in overtime giving the Carl Albert State College Vikings a thrilling 61-59 win over the Redlands Community College Cougars in the second game of Monday night’s doubleheader in El Reno.
D. Brown’s 14 points weren’t enough for the Lady Vikings as they lost 57-39 to the Lady Cougars in Monday night’s opener.
The CASC teams will return to action next Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. The women’s game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men’s contest at 8 p.m.

Howe teams get sweep of Pocola on Monday night

POCOLA — Third time was indeed a charm for the Howe Lions in their basketball game Monday night against the Pocola Indians at the Pocola High School gym.
After losing on their home court to the Indians before Christmas break and in the 81st LeFlore County Tournament, the Lions took the third match-up between the two teams — and in dominating fashion, posting a 72-53 victory.
The Lady Lions opened Monday night’s doubleheader by holding off the pesky Lady Indians 62-58.

Panama basketball teams suffer home losses to Wilburton Diggers

PANAMA — It was a rough end to the regular season for the Panama High School basketball teams Monday night at home as both squads lost to Wilburton.
The Lady Diggers took a 34-27 win over the Lady Razorbacks, while the Diggers routed the Hogs 72-49.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Wolves sent their six seniors out in style Friday night as they defeated the Stigler Panthers 63-50 at the Heavener High School gym.
Trailing 8-7 after a period, the Wolves outscored the Panthers 21-14 in the second quarter to take a 28-22 lead at intermission.
Heavener then outscored Stigler 24-18 in the third quarter to take a 52-40 lead into the final period.
Pocola 82, Hartshorne 56: In Pocola, the Indians led 22-19 after a period and slowly increased the lead from there. Pocola had a 46-27 halftime lead, and took a 63-39 advantage into the final period.

POCOLA — A fourth-quarter rally enabled the Pocola Lady Indians to earn a 35-31 come-from-behind victory over the Hartshorne Lady Miners on Friday night for Senior Night at the Pocola High School gym.
Down 24-21 after three periods, the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Miners 14-7 in the final quarter to get the win.
Spiro 59, Sallisaw 49: In Spiro, the Lady Bulldogs trailed most of the game. Philicea Mack’s free throw with 29 seconds left put Spiro ahead for the first time all night.

Cameron teams make district title games, but lose to Kiowa

CAMERON — The good news is that the Cameron High School basketball teams picked up wins Friday night in the Class A District Tournament to make Saturday night's title games — and assure another week's worth of practice.
The bad news was the Cameron teams ran into buzz saws called the Kiowa Cowgirls and Cowboys in the championship games.
The Cowgirls stung the Lady Yellowjackets 77-36 in Saturday night's title game, then the Cowboys lassoed the ’Jackets 71-45.
