Virginia Louise Wade Tomlinson

July 15, 2014

Virginia Louise Wade Tomlinson, 75, of Panama died Sunday, July 13, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark. Virginia was born April 7, 1939, in Bokoshe to Samuel Leslie and Edith (Sutton) Morgan. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was a member of First Step of Faith Church in Poteau. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Wade; son, Tommy Wade; daughter, Jackie Byrd; grandson, Jay Walls; her parents; and sister, Donna Bush.

State Education Department begins inclusive process to develop new academic standards

OKLAHOMA CITY (July 15, 2013) – The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is encouraging Oklahoma educators, parents and others interested in public education to consider taking part in the development of new academic standards for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Coordinated by OSDE, the standards-creation process is designed to be as inclusive and comprehensive as possible.

Interim Study to Examine State Water Plan

From the days of the Dust Bowl to the creation of a transportation corridor to get goods from the Arkansas River to the Mississippi and beyond, water has made a huge impact on the economy of Oklahoma since statehood.
 

Area businesses urged to welcome rodeo crowd

2014 Phil Gardenhire Memorial Rodeo will be held July 18 and 19 at the LeFlore County Fairgrounds in Poteau.
Area businesses are being asked by the Poteau Chamber of Commerce to extend a hometown welcome to rodeo participants and visitors during the IPRA event.
The Chamber hopes that businesses will decorate the store fronts, signs and billboards in celebration of the annual rodeo tradition.
Gates open at 6 p.m. both nights and the rodeo kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
On July 19, rodeo guys and gals will take to the streets during a parade in downtown Poteau at 4 p.m.

July 14, 2014

Bonnie J. Anderson Turano, 79, of Sulphur, La., died Sunday, July 6, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by her children.
Bonnie was born on June 12, 1935, in Williams to Harve and Rose Shoup Anderson. She graduated from Panama High School, class of 1953. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Emma Lawrence and Shirley Autry; and her husband of 53 years, Garland Turano.
