J.T. Smith

J.T. Smith, 83, of Poteau died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Poteau. J.T. was born in Sugar Loaf on Jan. 31, 1929, to Finis and Hestor (McMillian) Smith. J.T. was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was a truck driver. J.T. was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Thurell Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Nina of the home; stepson, John Terry of Mojave, Calif.; three step-grandchildren, Rhonda Terry, Jenna Terry and Justin Terry; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.

Velta Ruth Pipkins

Velta Ruth Pipkins, 78, of Pocola died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Velta was born Sept. 30, 1934, in Mulberry, Ark., to Clyde and Letha (Jordan) Drummond. She was a furniture refurbisher for many years and then worked for Welker Machine Shop. Velta was preceded in death by her father; daughter, Linda Partlow Wilkins; and great-grandson, Noah Holsted.

Bobbie Lee Anderson Morrison, 33, formerly of Krebs, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa.

Lida Eleanor “Ellie” Crosswell

Lida Eleanor “Ellie” Crosswell, 74, of Midland, Ark., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, in Spiro. She was born March 18, 1938, in Aliquippa, Pa., to Lewis and Lida (Covert) Maratta. She retired from Burton Pools and Spas and was a member of Harvest Time Tabernacle, Fort Smith, Ark.
Ellie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Lois Kamenski.

Poteau girls win third-place contest at Keys Cougars Invitational, but Pirates lose consolation championship game

PARK HILL — The Poteau Lady Pirates basketball team ended its stay at the Keys Cougars Invitational on the right foot after beating Tulsa Holland Hall 48-43 Saturday afternoon in the third-place game.
The Pirates lost the consolation championship game to Holland Hall 45-37 in the game before after they won their first game of the season with a 56-52 win over the Fort Gibson junior varsity on Friday.

Talihina boys lose title game of CNT to Rattan Rams; Lady Golden Tigers place third; Wister boys win seventh-place game

TALIHINA — The good news was the host Talihina High School basketball teams brought home some hardware from the 2012 Choctaw Nation Tournament, which concluded Saturday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium. Unfortunately, neither host team won first place.
The Golden Tigers lost 44-39 to the Rattan Rams in Saturday night's championship game after beating the Pocola Indians 59-46 in Friday night's semifinals.
