Joel Dwayne Hicks, 31, of Poteau died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2011, in Poteau. Joel was born Nov. 11, 1979 in McAlester. Joel worked in construction. He loved to play football and golf. He loved his daughter so very much. He was saved and brought to the Lord the summer of 2010. He was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Wayne Hicks; grandparents, Lowell Dee and Atha Belle Hicks, Ray C. Babb, Iris Babb Cabe and Tom Cabe.
Albert Ernest Hall Jr., 76, of Heavener died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at his home.
Albert served on the Carl Albert State College Board of Regents for 11 years. He was co-owner with his father of the Sinclair station in Heavener. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Heavener Lions Club. He graduated with a business degree from the University of Oklahoma and was an avid OU fan.
Albert served seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
The annual Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the Poteau High School cafeteria and served from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
A traditional meal of turkey and dressing , mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, hot rolls and a variety of desserts will be served.
There is no charge for the meal.
Editor's Note — This is the second of a two-part story previewing the Poteau High School basketball teams.
The Poteau Pirates basketball team was 13-10 last season, and the Pirates are looking for better things when the season begins next week.
“We're excited,” Poteau Boys Coach Scott Nelke said about getting the season going. “We had a couple of scrimmages this week. We're ready to put on a uniform, and go up against somebody different. The kids have been in here for about three weeks. We're excited and ready to get the year going.”
The Arkoma High School basketball teams will begin their new seasons Tuesday night at home against Gans. The girls' game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys' contest at 8 p.m.
The Pocola High School basketball teams will tip off their 2011-12 seasons Tuesday night at Stigler. The girls will get things started at 6:30 p.m. as they face former Heavener Girls Coach Jeff Walker's new team, the Stigler Lady Panthers. That will be followed at 8 p.m. by the boys' game.
The Talihina High School basketball teams will get their seasons started Tuesday night at Antlers, with the girls' game at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys' contest at 8 p.m.
