In a doubleheader featuring two slow-pitch heavyweights, the visiting Tahlequah Lady Tigers posted a doubleheader sweep of the Poteau Lady Pirates on Tuesday, winning 9-7 and 8-5.
Pocola 17, Heavener 13: In Heavener, down to their final three outs, the Lady Indians scored seven runs in the seventh inning to rally for the win.
Howe 14, Whitesboro 6: In Howe, the Lady Lions broke a 3-all tie with a three-run second inning and a four-run third inning for a 10-3 lead after three innings.

Rose State sweeps Carl Albert baseball team

MIDWEST CITY — The Carl Albert State College baseball team suffered a road doubleheader loss at the hands of Rose State College on Tuesday afternoon, both by shutouts by scores of 2-0 and 7-0.
The Vikings, who played the Bacone College junior varsity Wednesday afternoon at Ival Goodman Field, will entertain Rose State at 1 p.m. Friday at Ival Goodman Field to make up Saturday’s rained out twinbill. Then, they will welcome Connors State College to town for a 1:30 p.m. Saturday single, nine-inning contest.

High School Boys Golf Roundup

SEMINOLE — The Poteau Pirates golf team was fifth out of 20 teams at the Seminole Invitational on a chilly, windy Monday at Jimmie Austin Golf Course. The Pirates had a team score of 358.
One Pirates golfer, Cody Shore, medaled as he was sixth with an 81.
Connor Wheat and Jarrett Lowrimore each shot 89s, John Scott Sanders carded a 99 and John Buckles had a 114.
Heavener golfer medalist at Broken Bow
BROKEN BOW — Heavener golfer Jackson Long was 10th-place medalist at Tuesday's Broken Bow Invitational, which took place at Cedar Creek Golf Course. He shot an even 100.

Easter egg hunt planned at Heavener Runestone Park

Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 784 and volunteers will hold a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt at Heavener Runestone Park at 11 a.m. Saturday.
More than 4,800 plastic eggs filled with candy will be placed in four separate areas. The area ages are for children 3 and younger, 4 to 8, 9 to 12, and a special area for physically handicapped children.
Parents are reminded that mixed in with the candy eggs are special prize eggs that have a numbered ticket. Parents should be sure to check all the eggs before leaving Heavener Runestone Park and claim the prize the day of the hunt.

CASC regents meet in Sallisaw

The Carl Albert State College board of regents named Kathy Quirk executive director of the CASC Development Foundation during a regular meeting at the college's Sallisaw campus.
Quirk has been managing the foundation on an interim basis, but the regents' actions made the job hers officially.
The regents meet twice a year at the J.T. & Mary Jo Stites Multipurpose Room at the Jerry Hetherington Center in Sallisaw, according to Judi White, director of public relations and marketing for Carl Albert State College.

Main Street Matters awards

Poteau Main Street Matters Executive Director Keri Powers said she’s hoping to see the pocket park on Dewey Street get a facelift. Powers made her remarks at the organization’s annual banquet Tuesday at the Reynolds Center.
She showed artist renderings of some of the planned improvements, including replacing the concrete flooring of the park with sod and building a stone and brick entry with iron gates that could be locked at night. Among the plans for raising money for the project are selling engraved bricks.

Diane Lorraine (Burch) Puryear

Diane Lorraine Puryear passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 25, 2013, at sunset, serenaded by a full chorus of frogs. She was born in Poteau on Aug. 11, 1951. She grew up in Panama and Arcata, Calif., with her three siblings, David, Linda and Bruce. Linda and David passed in 2012, preceded by Bruce in 1997. Diane graduated from Arcata High School in 1969. She joined the U.S. Marine Corps for two years during the Vietnam era. While enlisted she was a clerk during the time of changing from typewriters to computers.

Marian E. Baker

March 27, 2013

Marian E. Baker, 99, passed away on March 24, 2013, after a long illness. She had been a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish for 77 years. She moved to Poteau from Kansas City, Mo., in 1935 with her husband, the late Dr. Wilbur K. Baker, DDS, and their 1-year-old son, Kermit. She has five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

James ‘Jimbo’ Wortham

James “Jimbo” Wortham, 28, of Spiro died Sunday, March 24, 2013. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Mallory-Martin Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Spiro City Cemetery.

Harry ‘Gene’ Elder

March 27, 2013

Harry “Gene” Elder, 84, of Howe died Friday, March 22, 2013, in Poteau. Services were held Monday at Mount View Baptist Church with burial in Mount View Cemetery in Glendale. Dowden Funeral Home handled arrangements.
