Enjoying our Tennessee vacation this week

As I wrote this week's column, my wife, Paula, and I are in Tennessee on Spring Break vacation with Cash and his buddy, Jeffery Morris. Our first stop was near Dover which is just south of “The Land Between the Lakes” [LBL] as it's called. This is a piece of land between Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley.

Rosie Lee Miller, 69, of Wister died Wednesday, March 20, 2013. 
Services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Evans Chapel of Memories, Poteau. Burial will be in Hontubby Cemetery under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home.

Poteau boys beat Oktaha, Smithville in Wood Bat Festival; Today's action will be moved to Friday if rained out

After losing a 16-8 home game Friday afternoon to the Talihina Golden Tigers, the Poteau Pirates baseball team returned to Town Creek Park for Day 1 of the 2013 Poteau Wood Bat Festival, and picked up two wins.
The Pirates had to rally late to down the Oktaha Tigers 3-2, then posted an 8-0 five-inning, run-rule victory over the Smithville Braves.
The Pirates are slated to play Plainview at 10 this morning, then face Seminole at 2 this afternoon in Day 2 action. However, if inclement weather occurs, the games will be moved to the same times on Friday.

Wister girls lose to Rattan in Red Oak Festival game

RED OAK — The Wister Lady Wildcats softball team suffered a 12-1 loss to the Rattan Lady Rams on Wednesday in the Red Oak Festival.
The Lady ’Cats fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and never were able to catch the Lady Rams.
The festival will conclude today, weather permitting, with both the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets playing three games.

No Class 3A Showcase games on Thursday

Due to the threat of bad weather on Thursday, Spiro baseball coach Paul Croft said that Thursday's Day 1 schedule of games in the Class 3A Showcase at Spiro — Spiro vs. Wilburton, Wilburton vs. Beggs, Beggs vs. Kansas, OKC Mount St. Mary vs. Kansas, Haskell vs. Hugo and Spiro vs. Haskell — have been canceled, and will not be rescheduled.
At this moment, Friday's games — OKC Mount St. Mary vs. Hugo, 10 a.m.; Hugo vs. Wilburton, noon; OKC Mount St. Mary vs. Beggs, 2 p.m.; Kansas vs. Okmulgee, 4 p.m.; Spiro vs. Okmulgee, 6 p.m. — are still scheduled to take place.

Carl Albert baseball team wins series finale from Southwestern Community College

Behind the strong pitching performance by former Red Oak Eagle Jordan Booth and some running blunders by Southwestern Community College Spartan runners was a good combination for the Carl Albert State College baseball team Monday afternoon as it defeated the Spartans 5-2 at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ival Goodman Field in a doubleheader with Rose State College.
