Petra Renate Margot Cox, 54, of Pocola died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Pocola. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Evans Memorial Chapel in Pocola with John Burns officiating. Evans and Miller Funeral Home in Pocola is handling arrangements.
Lana Frances Hinson, 64, of Mena, Ark., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Mena. Lana was born Aug. 8, 1948, in Hackett, Ark., to John and Bertha (Weaver) Prater. She worked at Whirlpool. Lana was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George Prater.Â
Survivors include her husband, Bobby of the home; sons, Billy Ray Hinson and Wayne Hinson of Poteau; five grandchildren; sister, Mary Russell and husband Paul of Norman; brothers, Norman Prater and wife Dorthy of Norman, Claude Prater and wife Linda of Stratford; other relatives and loved ones.
Nova Armstrong, 93, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Poteau. Nova was born Jan. 6, 1920 in Belzoni to Robert Lee and Maudie (Goforth) Goodin. Nova was a seamstress for more than 40 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Armstrong; sons, Gary and Clarence; seven sister, and five brothers.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dale Barnes of Sallisaw, Ernestine and Floyd Morris of Poteau; son, Don Armstrong of Poteau; sister, Ila Redifer; 11 grandchildren; nine great- grandchildren; other relatives and loved ones.
Syble Neff, 88, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Heavener. Syble was born Jan. 19, 1924 in Poteau to Otha L. and Emma (White) Johnson. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, James L. Neff. Brothers, Othal â€śBudâ€ť Johnson, Tommy Allen Johnson; sisters, Grace Marler, Elenor Dorey, Elise Welch, Emma Jean Hanley and Billie Dean Stock.
Barbara Gillion, 69, of Spiro died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. She was born Oct. 8, 1943, in Fort Smith to Harold and Dorothy (Bodine) Hamilton. She was a bookkeeper, working at Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam, Spiro Builders Inc. and C.A.R. Transport in Burleson, Texas. Barbara was a true blue Dallas Cowboys fan, she loved the University of Oklahoma Sooners and she was the first and only Miss Spiro.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Gene Hamilton.
Pearl Roberta Bost, 76, of Poteau died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, in Fort Smith, Ark. Pearl was born June 21, 1936, in Poteau to Walter N. and Cleo V. (Collins) Durant. She was a homemaker. She also worked at McDonaldâ€™s in Walmart. Pearl was a member of Double Branch Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Bost; and three brothers, Johnny George, Carl Willis and Walter Noah Durant.
George Harvey Urchison Sr., 94, of Howe died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Howe. He was born March 5, 1918, at Kaw City to George and Lucy Elizabeth (Richard) Urchison. He was a mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one, daughter Wanda Urchison; three brothers and two sisters.
Oweeta J. Carroll, 92, of Poteau died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, in Poteau. Oweeta was born Sept. 18, 1920, in Hon, Ark. to Frederick Washington and Ora Myrtle (Hicks) Newman. She worked in the county veterans office. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alfred J. Carroll; daughter, Dorothy J. Carroll; son, Billy Dean Carroll; grandson, Seth Goins; brother, Joe Paul Newman and his wife Lorene; sister, Mabel Woods and her husband J.D.; brother-in-law, Tom Peck; and sister-in-law, Mildred Newman.
PANOLA â€” Leflore's Caleb Smith hit the twine for 40 points as the Leflore Savages dominated the Panola Bearcats for a 67-35 win â€” and their fifth straight victory.
The â€™Cats only trailed 23-13 at halftime, but the Savages outscored them 34-2 in the third quarter to take a 57-15 lead into the final period.
Smith's 40 points came in only three periods.
â€śHe could have probably gotten 70 had he played the entire game,â€ť said Daniel Caldwell, Leflore's first-year coach.
BOKOSHE â€” A pair of Miranda McFarland free throws in the waning seconds helped the Bokoshe Lady Tigers to a 53-51 win over the Arkoma Lady Mustangs on Friday night at Bokoshe Tigers Fieldhouse.
With 12 seconds left, McFarland hit two charity tosses to give the Lady Tigers a 53-51 lead.
The Lady Mustangs had one last chance to tie or win the game, but did not get a good shot off.
