As freshmen and sophomores, the current seniors on the Poteau Lady Pirates softball team made the Class 6A State Tournament, only to lose in the quarterfinals each time. As eighth-graders, the current seniors watched the Lady Pirates make slow-pitch state, which began the streak of three straight seasons of making slow-pitch state.
The Lady Pirates, who missed out on slow-pitch state last spring, want to get back there, and can do so by winning Wednesday’s Class 6A Regional Tournament in Muskogee.
The home career for six Poteau Lady Pirate senior softball players did not end the way they hoped.
The Red Oak Lady Eagles came to town and swept a pair of games Monday on Senior Night.
The Lady Eagles got a 10-0 mercy-rule victory in four innings in the opener, then took the nightcap 10-3.
Editor’s note: Tuesday’s road game at Muldrow was postponed and will not be made up.
SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs lost a heart-breaking nine-inning game to the Poteau Pirates in the finals of the 32nd LeFlore County Tournament earlier this month. The ’Dogs avenged that loss Monday on Senior Night with a 9-4 win over the Pirates.
After the Pirates tied the game at 4 in the third inning, the Bulldogs scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth inning — all unearned runs — to take a 7-4 lead. The ’Dogs added two more runs in the fifth inning.
Heavener 4, Broken Bow 3: In Heavener, the Wolves celebrated Senior Night with a victory.

OKLAHOMA CITY — James Harden’s return to Chesapeake Energy Arena for his first playoff game since being traded at the beginning of the season was, of course, received with a chorus of boos as he was introduced. Then the Oklahoma City Thunder crushed Harden and the Houston Rockets 120-91 in a game that really wasn’t that close at the end.Â
The series resumes Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Game 2.

CAMERON — The good news was the Cameron Yellowjackets baseball team, the host for the Class A District Tournament, made it to the title game. The bad news was the Yellowjackets ran into the Smithville Braves.
The Braves beat the ’Jackets in back-to-back games, winning the district title with a 16-6 mercy-rule win Saturday afternoon after edging them 2-1 on Friday night. The season ended for the Yellowjackets at 9-15.
The other local team in the field, the Howe Lions, went 0-2 on Friday, falling 13-8 to Cameron then 12-2 to Smithville to end their season at 6-10.
STUART — The Cameron Lady Yellowjackets softball team’s season came to an end on Friday at the Class 2A District Tournament.
After the Lady ’Jackets beat the Kiowa Cowgirls and former Panama player Lauren Smith 13-9, Cameron lost twice to the Stuart Lady Hornets by scores of 12-0 and 16-8 to finish the season at 6-13.
The 2013 soccer season ended on a bright note for the Poteau girls soccer team with a 2-1 victory over Porter Consolidated in a battle of Lady Pirates on Friday night in Porter.
This week, we'll be in full-fledged playoffs in high school baseball and slow-pitch softball.
Last week was a rough one on LeFlore County's baseball and softball teams. All of the Class A baseball teams — Arkoma, Cameron and Howe — and seven of the nine softball teams all have been eliminated. Only Leflore and Whitesboro boys and Wister girls claimed district titles last week to advance to this week's regional tournaments.
Class 4A, 3A and 2A baseball district tournaments and the regional tournaments for the Poteau and Wister girls will be this week. The complete schedule is listed below.
